### "StarChapter for Non-Profit Organizations"

November 27, 2023

5.0

Starchapter has saved our organization a lot of money by reducing the subscriptions we had into one program. Setting up the website was easy to do with the SC support team, there were a few add-ons that we didn't anticipate that cost a little bit more, but we still saved hundreds by switching to StarChapter. Our organization is super excited to enhance our online presence with our members and sponsors through StarChapter!

Pros

StarChapter combines a lot of separate programs we previously used into one easy to access program. It manages email forwarders, displays sponsors logos on our website, and automatically updates based off of when the sponsor has paid through. StarChapter also allows us to setup email templates that are automatically sent to new or lapsed members which eliminates the need for our membership chair to constantly have to remember to check our rosters and compare them month to month.

Cons

The administration side of the website turned out to be a little more challenging than we originally expected. Some of the functions and website design aren't as intuitive as we would have liked and has required additional training for the less tech savvy members on our board.

It cost less for us to remove the four other subscriptions and condense into one. It also eliminated the need for four different logins, which can be hard to collect during board transitions.

### "Reliable Platform with Outstanding Support"

April 22, 2025

4.0

My overall experience with StarChapter has been excellent. The customer service truly stands out. I never have to wait long for a response to a support ticket, and the replies are always detailed and helpful. I honestly wish all of the associations I work with were on StarChapter!

Pros

I really appreciate how user-friendly StarChapter is. I’ve been using it for five years now, and even when I first started, it never felt overwhelming especially compared to other platforms I’ve worked with. It’s intuitive, easy to navigate, and has made managing our chapter much more efficient.

Cons

I do wish some features offered more customization, but it's not a significant issue certainly not enough to make me consider switching platforms.

### "Some Good ... Some Not So Good"

June 20, 2025

3.0

It does some things well but costs way too much for the service and does not continue developing and fixing issues.

Pros

One stop integration of my web, email, registration and payment needs. I like the ability to send emails to non registered members.

Cons

The Cost and the fact that it keeps going up but not adding new features or fixing known issues. Several features or actions require intricate knowledge of how the site works and are buried under several clicks. The amounts deposited to my bank do not match what star chapter reports to me. The amounts often round up a penny in Star Chapter's favor and it makes me go back and edit the journal entries. This is STUPID!!!! I don't care about the penny .... I do care about your system making me do the extra work. Transaction reports do not give me all the info I need for journal entries. I can see buyer, amounts and what event they are for but can not see the details of what was purchased. For that I have to go to another page and view the order itself. Much extra effort that could very easily simply be in the one report.

### "Chapter Maintenance is Much Easier"

April 29, 2025

4.0

We have been able to do more with StarChapter than with our old system because it is easier to use and has a great Knowledgebase to use.

Pros

The membership maintenance is my favorite part. Keeping track of members is critical to our success, and StarChapter does a great job at this. I also love the ease of board transition and how it will update the website automatically.

Cons

I would like to be able to click on a number on the dashboard and it drill down into what makes up the number. Especially the Revenue piece.

### "You get exactly what you pay for."

April 22, 2025

2.0

The overall experience has been ambivalent. It works on a base level and meets the needs of pre-2020 associations, but don't expect anything more out of it.

Pros

StarChapter is inexpensive, and you get what you pay for. The invoicing system is easy to understand.

Cons

StarChapter is rigid and barely operational when utilizing the corporate member manager, which was one of the main reasons we selected it. You can label/group members with unique tags, but none of them can be exported from the Member list. Instead, you have to pull the entire list of groups/labels and sort through the data, making the function a giant time sink. The email system has two options for deployment: send now or schedule later. However, you can only select the date to schedule. StarChapter will deploy the email at some unknown time, usually at odd hours in the morning. Most of my clients prefer using a third party for emailing for this reason, as well as the anachronistic email building tools. Scheduling recurring emails is unfriendly and just not worth it. Not to mention, the media gallery is broken more often than it is operable. My staff has found a workaround to link images in emails and webpages, but the site just hangs when trying to upload images. When this happens, you're forced to reload the page, which takes you out of whatever you were editing, only to not save any of what you've done. If this occurs while you're editing a webpage, you may also be locked out of the page for 5 minutes from a security feature. Hitting the back button on the browser while utilizing any parts of the dashboard is the kiss of death. I've never seen anything like it until using StarChapter. Utility has never been a priority for StarChapter, which is evidenced by their development of new design templates for websites that were only offered to get clients out of an old pricing structure. Lastly and I wish I could bold and underline this. StarChapter cannot process international payments in its dashboard or on its user-facing side. Any associations with international members, do not use this product unless you want to spend extra time using the virtual terminal or a third-party merchant.

### "No real time support "

April 16, 2025

2.0

I’d rate Star Chapter a 5 out of 10, primarily due to the absence of a live support desk during business hours. When an issue arises, I don’t need a solution 24 hours later—I need real-time assistance so I can resolve the problem and get on with my day.

Pros

\[sensitive content hidden\] did a nice job onboarding me to StarChapter, but then I was left to the 24 hour response tickets. Whomp Whomp

Cons

The biggest con is that there is no immediate help available. You have to submit a ticket and wait 24 hours for someone to contact you to tell you they don't understand your ticket or to give more information. Then, the actual issue never gets solved. The actual software is not as user-friendly as expected and it would be helpful to have a helpdesk available to take calls during business hours. Additionally, I should be able to report on any field captured in my data.

### "Easy to use"

June 18, 2025

4.0

Our overall experience with StarChapter has been a good one. It makes managing events, dealing with registration and tracking attendance a breeze.

Pros

Star Chapter is great for overall chapter management. With registration and email communication built in, you have an all-in-one system that saves both money and time by not having to use multiple platforms.

Cons

I would like to see more tutorials made available so I don't have to reach out to tech support because I can't find what I'm looking for. Changes can be frustrating without knowledge of coding. Response time seems to be a little longer than when we first started using.

My overall experience with StarChapter has been a positive experience. There is always ways to improve but I am satisfied with it.

### "Good integrated system"

November 22, 2023

5.0

StarChapter has streamlined our website management with its extensive proprietary integration. Although they have just raised their prices, it is still a reasonable value and the simplest way for us to pull all of our functions together.

Pros

We went with StarChapter because it integrates website, membership management and email into one system. StarChapter is based on WordPress, which makes for easier learning for users already familiar with WordPress. Event management is a plus. There's an extensive knowledgebase for help and StarChapter support department is very responsive.

Cons

1\. The system is so feature rich that there is a substantial learning curve to master the full capabilities. 2. Although webpage editing is based on WordPress' block editor, the content editing and navigation editing is a bit clunky. Fortunately, there is a source code (HTML) option, but StarChapter inserts additional tags based on its CSS. 3. The elimination of 3rd party payment processors in favor of its proprietary (and extra cost) StarPay system means we have to use payment links to the processor instead of keeping everything within StarChapter.

We had started with a custom programmed website and the migrated to Concrete CMS to have a website that wasn't reliant on a particular programmer, so multiple people could make content changes. However, the website was separate from mass email system (Constant Contact) and membership management (mySQL database). StarChapter provides an all-in-one solution.

### "Platform with tremendous promise & responsive customer service, but has a steep learning curve."

November 2, 2021

3.0

StarChapter's pitch is that they provide an efficient and effective CRM and website solution for small, under-resourced associations. Three months in, I can see how it will become that solution with a significant investment in time. In the interim, we have lost some business and aggravated some members and it will take time to recoup those losses. At the same time, it is real value for the money. Trying to replicate the functions included in StarChapter through other platforms or combinations of platforms would be everywhere from 50% to 125% more than StarChapter.

Pros

First, StarChapter has a solid value proposition for a small organization -- competitive with Wild Apricot and similar "value" options. However, biggest selling point is its customer support. Unlike Wild Apricot, StarChapter doesn't outsource set up and has an in-house design team that walks you through the process. (start up cost 1/3rd of what I was quoted to set up a Wild Apricot site!). They were very accommodating and worked hard to create a web layout that replicated our branding image, and were able to integrate some external features. The final product exceeded expectations at launch, and was handled seamlessly.

Cons

The steep, steep learning curve and the absence of an on-call service line. Although the set up was excellent, I was not ready to manage the system on my own when we launched. As a result, I really struggled to complete basic tasks, and made lots of errors that resulted in member frustration or confusion. I was able to send in support tickets and get responses - usually within 24 hours, but the damage was often done by the time I got an answer. I think a comprehensive user manual - whether on-line or downloadable, would be really helpful. The knowledge base is very segmented and it's not easy to get step by step instructions when you need them.

Reason for choosing StarChapter

Price, price, price. All in "one" system (website, events, communications and member database), and the availability of support. Small non-profits need support and StarChapter was the only one that offered that for a price that wouldn't cripple our budget. Even though I have had frustrations getting things resolved, I shudder to think of how much worse off I would be if we opted for Wild Apricot!

### "Basically happy"

April 16, 2025

4.0

I have been using it for 8 months now. The learning curve was a little steep even though I have a lot of background in content management systems. It does take support 2-3 days to reply to a non-urgent request but they have always been very helpful once they respond or we have a zoom meeting.

Pros

Support is very helpful; the product meets our needs and the website looks good.

Cons

The back end is logical but not intuitive. Once you know where something is or how to use it, it works great but those things aren't always intuitive.

### "Frustrated with Star Chapter"

July 10, 2024

4.0

Very cumbersome and difficult to use. Hard to get anyone to help.

Pros

It's nice that I'm able to create an event, send out emails to members, and have them login and pay all in the same place. (When it works)

Cons

It has been very difficult for members to renew their membership or new members to join using Star Chapter. I have tried to contact Star Chapter, but it seems they don't have enough people and can only offer a call back at another time. I'm a volunteer on a local chapter, I don't have time to sit at my computer waiting for a call back.

Reason for choosing StarChapter

### "A big step up from hosting your own website"

June 30, 2021

4.0

StarChapter is relatively easy to learn if you already have some background in web development. But the layperson may need more support in order to accomplish their goals with the site. We hired a web developer to work with StarChapter's team and set up our website in order to give the site a little more polish. StarChapter's training videos are very helpful in getting started on the site, and I highly recommend watching them.

Pros

StarChapter makes it very easy to track registration and payments for our monthly meetings. Our previous process was for attendees to email one specific person, and all payments were handled on-site at the meeting. We were able to reduce the time commitment for our Registration chair significantly by switching to StarChapter, and we've been able to open up pre-payment for meetings through online credit card payments. This helps to ensure more turnout, since people are more likely to show up when they've already paid. It is also much easier to enable multiple people to work on the site, and those people don't need a background in web development to do important tasks that keep the Chapter running, like posting new meetings and newsletters, and keeping our calendar updated.

Cons

My least favorite part of the platform is the text editor, which isn't terribly surprising. If you want to include more than simple text for an event or mailing, you are better off creating the content outside StarChapter and importing an image or attaching a PDF with your content. I think this is a pretty typical complaint with text editors, but it would streamline our processes if we could do everything in one place.

### "Great solution for volunteer organization."

August 9, 2022

5.0

Our chapter is very pleased with the migration to Star Chapter. Event management, Communication, and members management features changed our chapter leadership engagement in website content and processing.

Pros

Event management is a game changer for our chapter. It is clear StarChapter put a lot of thought into managing events from registration, order processing, reporting and payment processing.

Cons

With the success of using Star Chapter for our events we are finding areas where different events have a few customization needs such as, different distribution list for invoices and receipts, refund policy, member/non-member registration, and registration wizard instructions.

### "President of NSA Georgia, Inc."

February 10, 2023

3.0

We us the slider design on our home page to present a professional view of what programs we are offering our members and guest. They can register for our association or a meeting and it is our central communication hub.

Pros

Allows members to register and pay online and provides the database from which to send notifications.

Cons

Not dynamic. Very linear in reporting etc. For example, I want to report showing all of the guest for a meeting, not a list by registration date or name. Who said they are coming in person? Not to have to get the report and manipulate the CSV file.

Reason for choosing StarChapter

It was supposedly an easy transition. I came on shortly after the "conversion" to find that we lost the date that our members initially joined, they are all 1950! We didn't have a technical person that understood what was happening and I wish Star Chapter had at least done some kind of check. We also didn't have any money flowing through to our bank because some third party payer setting wasn't correct. Again, some conversion help. Right now, I am thinking of looking at other association management software because of the clunky database and lack of visual design ability.

### "Implementation was frustrating"

November 22, 2022

4.0

Signing up with SP was a real hassle. We are a small non-profit chapter of a national organization with minimal monthly / annual money flows where we need SP to funnel online payments. Their underwriters were not accommodating to the information we provided - we didn't have exactly what they wanted. Our bank issues all checks after we give them an online check request (we have no check stock). What they provided for a voided check was an online version. We explained that, but SP kept demanding a voided check. Had to get SC management to convince the SP u/ws to let our application through. Also, SP's response time was horrible. I would send an uploaded response one day, they would send a system-generated "received it" response the next, then not get to a review until the following day, then respond the day after that. They were so late in approving our account that we had to forgo the online collection in our November 2022 luncheon and dip into savings to pay for the monthly meeting expense out of reserves (about $1,500).

Pros

The look and feel of the StarChapter ("SC") website is so much better than what we previously had through the national "mother" association.

Cons

Implementation was said to be quick and easy. We had exactly the opposite. Little follow-up, unclear directions, reliance on written tutorials rather than a live body to help us through the process, email contact that was not direct from the implementation person which caused the "system-generated" email to not just get caught in a spam filter but to get lost in a quarantine quagmire. Also, we provided tax details that only were acceptable after we pointed out it was all the IRS issued to us. SC was able to go to the IRS's online look-up which gave SC the same details we sent them - then they said what we sent was good. I still don't understand what the hang-up was but didn't push it any further. When we finally got approval for the StarPay ("SP") module, the SC implementation person turned off our "collect money at the door" option for registrants (she was not directed to do so), and had to go back again to get her to turn that back on. It was an easy and overnight fix, but shouldn't have had to go through the time and hassle of doing that in the first place.

Reason for choosing StarChapter

The sales person was quite good. Helped us in a very good presentation. The implementation team left a lot to be desired.

### "ASPE BC Chapter StarChapter Reviews"

Good days and bad days. There are still a lot things to learn. Knowledge based learning is good. Unfortunately time is a big thing when we all do the job as a volunteer.

Pros

Set up the meeting and the registration for the meeting. Check up the statistic of the use of the website.

Cons

Unfortunately Board member changes every year and new members needs training. An annual introductory training sessions would help.

### "Honest Review"

January 5, 2021

4.0

Overall it has served us very well. There are many "work arounds". From the perspective of someone who has done some software design, the navigation of star chapter is built on the concept the administrators don't want to see or understand the logic behind the scenes. This leads to a lot of confusion and as more and more people are forced to learn computers and programming type of understanding, it makes many navigational tabs very clunky, unnecessary, and confusing. For example, there is a very nice section for "Board Transition" which is somewhat of a hand holding to set up new profiles for board/leadership members and remove old or outdated members. It would be much easier to just have a section that says "Email Routing" where you can see the logic that "Treasurer@abcorg.com" routes to "JohnDoe@abccorp.com". Instead it is a clunky process similar to a turbo tax style of question and answer that is not as easily understood.

Pros

This is great for organizations and non profit that need something simple to get them going. We use this to manage members, as well as host our e-commerce type transactions for events.

Cons

It is a bit clunky and not as intuitive when wanting to do more advanced level organizational management. For example, if a member has not renewed their membership there is a grace period and then the member gets moved to a different list. If that member wants to renew- they have to create a whole new login which adds to confusion when the user expects to just to be able to login and renew their membership. Since starchapter has membership level built into their pricing, it makes it very hard for organizations to keep a seemless record of "active" and "inactive" members. This makes a big difference when doing complex registration or selling of items on the e-commerce site. For example a member may get a certain discount versuses a non member. It is very clunky if a user wants to pay for a membership and get membership pricing of an event registration all at the same time. It is very limited in that logic.

### "Room for improvement, but outstanding product & service"

May 1, 2019

4.0

The ACFE has 188 chapters world wide. I'm the Vice President of the San Diego Chapter and a member of our National Leadership Council of 12. I'm asked routinely throughout the US about StarChapter and sing your praises for the outstanding job you do. In hindsight, I'm hoping StarChapter does get the opportunity to begin showing signs of growth and maturity in their website platform and processes. I'm saying this from a truly humble place myself as I've just taken our own local chapter from 26 members (7 of which were board members) to now over 100 by biting the bullet and making the changes necessary to move us forward.

Pros

Although there's much room for improvement in certain functionalities, StarChapter provides an outstanding product & service and their tech support staff has always been extremely professional and well versed in all things website maintenance.

Cons

1) Somehow your organization needs to find the budget for true novice to intermediate tech support to handle incoming calls, assisting with the rudimentary or emergency items. Currently, Customer Service Agents solely manning the phones to either set up Tech Support Tickets or redirect customers to go online followed by a 24 – 48 hour wait time for an initial response. By the time the client receives their email answer or online chat meeting, it could be 3-6 business days later in total. Remember, your client’s bottom line is priority #1. If there’s a problem with either of the following (to name a few), you’ve just caused your client unnecessary setback and frustration: • A problem with their payment gateway connection. • A problem with their membership or event registration processing correctly • A problem with email blasts going out correctly 2) Update your website portal to include proper “how to” instructions. I'm sure you feel you’ve already done so but 80-90% of the time, this is not the case for those clients that are self-doers. 3) For 3 years I’ve been working with StarChapter and must have suggested at least a dozen good suggestions for your website engineers to create/fix and still have not seen the changes produced. I’ve even offered to pay out of pocket for these changes and yet still no further action is available.
