### "An Architect's Favourite BIM software alternatives!"

August 30, 2019

4.0

VectorWork is now supported with many 3rd party rendering software like lumion for the live sync rendering by installing the plugin for even better result, so whenever you make a changes, the render will follow up. And when it comes to choosing BIM softwares, especially if you're new to it, the VectorWorks is the good choice to start for learning BIM due to their support and very complete yet detailed tutorials given on their official website. VectorWorks is mile ahead from other BIM softwares when it comes to landscape, 3D modelling and 2D details.

Pros

Just like another software that offers BIM technology and features, this software are extremely helpful tools to working in parallels while doing a bunch of different project of building because the floor plans, elevations and sections are linked together, the results can be viewed as 2D and 3D simultaneously. But, what makes this app different from the rest of other BIM adopted softwares is the Customer support and apps tutorials given for the users that you can find on the VectorWorks official website. there you can learn from the very basic tutorials to the complex one, displayed using interactive video with step by step guide on the descriptions. And the built in rendering tools are awesome as well, the result is more than enough to be used for project presentation.

Cons

Sometimes you have to set some of the construction details, like determining the materials specifications and dimension MANUALLY unless you buy the add on packages or plug in which are inconvenient compared to what other BIM softwares are offering. And you'll need a device with plenty of free storages or memory because this software is taking so much space, it's huge! even better to be used on a device with dedicated processor and graphic card for better performance.

### "Vectorworks Review"

January 7, 2022

4.0

Over time I have become less and less impressed as other software come out and the limitations of this software have become evident. Good for simple stuff, keep away if you will use this for more complex modern BIM requirements.

Pros

Simple to use and learn, presentation style is good and clean. Great for 2D CAD working and simple projects.

Cons

This is not an advanced BIM authoring tool and I would advise people to steer away from it if this is what is required. Long term should revert itself to a 2D tool and then focus efforts on ArchiCAD as their excellent BIM authoring tool.

### "You are on your own once you buy in"

I am stuck with it for now. I wish they had support that could honestly help. It was great service when they started out.

Pros

quick to learn, easy modelling, but after that it drives of the cliff. There are a lot of glitch this week's flavor is wall-types that won't day. The list is long

Cons

Customer service is lousy, even if you pay the premium, which is not worth it, as they often can't solve your problem and have to upload your file, then their response can take days or never

### "Great for smaller projects"

August 16, 2022

4.0

Overall its easy to pick-up and has been getting better over the years.

Pros

What I like most about this program is that it is fairly easy to pick up from the start and be really affective.

Cons

It would be great if they figure out a way to include some sort of clash detection in vectorworks.

### "Simple, effective CAD package that looks great"

November 2, 2018

5.0

This effective and intuitive CAD platform enables me to produce architectural drawings for clients with ease. I can produce incredibly detailed construction drawings that are both readable and informative and enable contractors, clients and any other 3rd party to understand exactly what is being proposed or changed.

Pros

2D tools are simple and intuitive - I have taught complete novices very quickly how to use the tools and produce great looking Architectural drawings. Can be set up so it is as easy as drawing on a drawing board (I.e. you draw to scale on a piece of paper (no silly model space/paper space like AutoCAD)). Colours, hatched, patterns and opacity all allow you to produce beautiful architectural drawings that are easy to understand and interpret. With tailoring shortcuts it is also very quick to use - I can produce drawings twice as fast as other employees on AutoCAD. Has options for 3D and BIM modelling (although I have only used it minimally as I prefer the freedom of drawing with simple lines). System for backing up data and saves is great and has saved my skin often when I could of lost days worth of work.

Cons

Has had issues with iOS updates in the past and time has been wasted waiting for patches. Very occasionally crashes for bizarre reasons.

### "Vectorworks makes CAD designing interesting!"

July 24, 2018

4.0

Pros

The flexibility of the software, combined with the deep catalogue of available 3D objects makes Vectorworks a powerhouse! It's capable of creating not only awesome top down CAD designs, but beautiful artistic renderings of your creations. Vectorworks lets you get out what you're willing to put in.

Cons

Vectorworks can take a decent amount of time to get intimately familiar with. There's plenty of classes and videos available to help you along your way, but there is certainly a skill cap to this software that requires professional knowledge to get the most out of it. It's not difficult to learn, but the skill cap is high to get the most out of it.

its a very good application for architects, the tutorial videos have helped alot

Pros

I learnt easily with the trial version then i upgrade, vector works is really great i can produce a well detailed specification, drawing schedules, floor plans, and fascinating 3D models.Vector works allow for collaboration with other CAD software, like REVIT ARCHITECTURE, its a perfect BIM tool

Cons

its slows down my PC, while carrying out complex, modelling operations, to enjoy using this application, we needed to upgrade our RAM, along with an high definition of PC graphics card,i still love this application, because of its high quality rendering produced.

### "Good but it would improve in so many aspects."

June 17, 2021

3.0

Pros

The software has a lot of options to do a drawing, but you waste some time because are too many ways to customize and do things.

Cons

Sometimes the software has a limited use for collaborating with others softwares. License is not cheap, and the updates are so minimum. Very occasionally crashes for no reason.

### "It could improve in many aspects"

June 6, 2018

3.0

I only had the knowledge to handle it

Pros

Vectorworks is a versatile design tool and if you want a user friendly interface, its basic libraries are very complete, in general lines it is a software for the design 2d and 3d easy to use and price value relation

Cons

I could say very few opinions against, but in my opinion the libraries of objects should be broader, applicable to different areas, such as the scope of the shows and related

### "Best Software for Architects"

February 19, 2020

5.0

The 3d benefits of VW is amazing! We are finding now that some of our consultants are now using the software therefore the sharing of files is extremely easy. BUT the exporting of files to AutoCad are great too.

Pros

This software is very intuitive. It works well with presentation software especially TwinMotion. We are a Mac based office and VW is very compatible. The VectorWorks Service Select subscription is great due to all the "how to" videos and consistent updates to their 3D library, etc.

Cons

The only con is that this software is so robust that we fear that we are not aware of all that it can do. A couple years ago we tried the VectorWorks cloud service so that a team can work on the same project at once and found it cumbersome. We have not tried it lately therefore this feature may have improved.

### "Some good features but let down by bugs and half finished elements. No go for BIM."

July 18, 2018

3.0

Shame as this could be a great software, yet after using it for years it just doesn't seem to be as complete a software as you would expect in 2018. Go for another, such as industry standard Revit.

Pros

2D Drawing is fine, basic 3D work is also fine. Classes and layers system is generally a good way of working. I like the clean appearance of the workspace.

Cons

Half implemented and half finished features. The software advertises itself as being compatible with BIM projects, but the 3D modelling and parametric 'smart' tools are buggy and unfinished, and many tools are way behind other software (i.e. Revit). Support is not great even when paid for.

### "Quick, powerful and concise communication tool"

October 14, 2017

5.0

Pros

Vectorworks can do a lot without getting in the way. It's easy to customize the tools to allow you to work the way that you want to work. With the powerful visualization features, it's easy to communicate highly-technical concepts to self-described non-technical people. In theatre and event production, this is an indispensable asset. And the best part is that the initial sketch can be transformed into the fully realized design drawings further saving time.

Cons

The only con I can think of is that the price can be cost prohibitive for freelancers just starting out. If you're able to afford to make the investment, it should pay off pretty quickly.

Pros

Cons

### "Produces beautiful drawings"

December 5, 2019

4.0

We use this software for early concept design as it simple and easy to use and produces beautiful concept plans and elevations.

Pros

We love this software for early concept design. The squiggly line affect means we can produce production quality drawings with ease that do not scare clients in the way a technical drawing would.

Cons

We use this software with a dongle license. this is a pain as when it is needed across the office the dongle has to be physically passed over. We would prefer an online based license moving system. We also find that when drawings are exported to AutoCAD for detail design there are some accuracy issues.

### "Good Alternative to AutoCAD"

April 11, 2018

Good alternative to autocad

Pros

The best thing about using Vector works is that it has a lot of useful features which enables you to produce detailed designs

Cons

The biggest drawbacks to using Vectorworks is that it is not as widely used in the construction industry, so can be limited in transferring between consultants etc.

### "A great product but not widely used."

April 30, 2018

4.0

We didn't implement as it isn't used much in the US.

Pros

Vectorworks seems to have all of the functionality one would need and at a more reasonable cost than the industry standard. 3D modeling and rendering works well and improvements are made consistently.

Cons

I would love a viable option in addition to Autodesk products. Vectorworks seems to be a great product and would be an option for smaller architect firms or those that focus on residential design but collaboration with engineers and other consultants who tend to work in AutoCad is easier when everyone is on the same platform.

### "Great but too convoluted"

October 26, 2025

4.0

Even with its glitches and flaws, we’re glad we went with Vectorworks. It’s so nice not having to bounce from one program to another to another, on the same project.

Pros

Our firm chose Vectorworks because of the ability to do so many different things in one program. We love being able to draw in 2D, or 3D (with good rendering abilities), or create all our construction documents in one place. There are also virtual classes and updates all the time which is nice.

Cons

Options are great, but there are actually too many ways to do things and too many menus per feature. As an analogy, it’s like using Studio Designer (1,000 different menus), when what we really want and need is a streamlined experience like Programa. The other frustrating thing is that the tools are too picky as to whether they will work on a shape. You have to pair the type of object (mesh, nurbs, polygon, etc) with the right tool or else it won’t work at all. I wish that all 3D tools would work on all 3D shapes, and all 2D tools would work on all 2D shapes. I also find the classes too convoluted and not very helpful.

### "Vector"works""

August 22, 2025

1.0

With Vectorworks you pay with work time. Having already used Vectorworks 4 years before I had hopes that they would have used the time to fix their software, but they managed to make it even worse in some aspects due to bugs. User expierience got a litte bit better when it comes to the main Interface, but the underlying lack of struckture with the tools combined with the bugs make it still a pain to use.

Pros

Probably the amount of funktions. Some are unique and useful Like the eraser Tool, but none are well tested and thought throu.

Cons

The unbearable amount of bugs. This Programm feels unfinished and rushed, basic things like dimensions and mirroring are plagued with bugs and inconsitencies and still don't get a fix. I usually see 3-10 bugs a day, including crashes and hung ups. The user expierience is way behind other softwares and lacks testing. For example: Vectorworks loves to distract you with huge windows popping up in your face like setting the scale in a multiple choice window instead of letting you type in the scale directly. The finishing of tool funktions is inconsistent: Some require a double click, others ESC, others ENTER to confirm your previous action. Too bad that some funktions delete your progress when pressing ESC and yes there is no indication - which makes it impossible figure out if it's caused by a bug or not.

Vector works takes my plans to the next level, giving our drawings an air of professionalism our clients are looking for.

Pros

Cons

### "The hub of my architectural workflow"

December 19, 2023

4.0

Overall, I'm pleased with it. It fits well into my workflow. It's a little bit expensive, and I do find it a bit frustrating that Vectorworks offers seasonal discounts that I can never take advantage of because my annual subscription renewal never coincides with them!

Pros

I love the flexibility and customisation options Vectorworks gives me. I can use it as a very simple drafting software for simple projects, or a fully-fledged BIM application for larger projects. With Vectorworks, I don't feel like I have to design in a way the software wants me to design.

Cons

There is a fairly long learning curve to get the most out of the software, and occasionally you do have to do a bit of head-scratching to figure something out. However, I feel like that is inevitable for software that offers this degree of flexibility.

### "VectorWorks really work hard"

March 8, 2022

5.0

Vectorworks will help you deliver excellent 2D drawings and can really work hard as a 3D program too. It has all the thrills of BIM but without the major benefit of being able to collaborate with other consultants, unless they also use Vectorworks.

Pros

Vectorworks produces the most graphically appealing and customisable drawings that I have experienced on any BIM software. This ability to make highly desirable 2D graphics and a simple 3D rendering tool that can quickly realise concepts in 3D makes Vectorworks appealing for small and mid sized Architecture practices. The program also harnesses the power of BIM to make models that are data driven.

Cons

The only downside of Vectorworks is that it won't work well when you need to collaborate with those who don't use it. Although it works well DWG as soon as you want to issue a model to a Revit user you are in trouble. This may be fine for a small Architecture practice that wants to use Vectorworks for 2D drafting and not share the 3D model, however this isn't very future proof.

We have generally had a superior experience using VectorWorks Architect, primarily on a OSX platform.

Pros

Cons

### "Intuitive, easy to use, powerful"

January 1, 2024

5.0

In general, my experience of many years of using the software and having grown with it from its very primitive versions, has been very good. I have managed to carry out complete designs with a very good integration in BIM, in a very easy and intuitive way. Without hesitation I recommend this platform for the development of any project in the industry.

Pros

Complete solution to develop architectural designs from the first sketches, with complete ease of 3D control of volumetry and shapes, perfect integration of 2D drawing and the generation of construction documents, as well as the possibility of generating complete reports for a good constructive process. Actually an excellent BIM option.

Cons

The possibility of generating optimal quality renders on the MAC OS platform is almost impossible. It must be integrated with other software solutions and at least on MacBook Pro it is a disaster. I understand that it is not entirely a software problem but it is really depressing.

### "Great software, but...."

February 19, 2020

4.0

We started using Vectorworks many years ago because it was truly superior to Autocad at producing legible drawings. But Autocad has caught up. And we prefer modeling in Rhino, even though it is a more cumbersome work flow. Meanwhile. for BIM, it makes more sense to use Revit simply because everyone else is using it. IF we were starting our office today, we would not be selecting Vectorworks, much as I like it as a drafting program. And the expensive annual upgrades are frustrating, given how little benefits are.

Pros

Vectorworks is a great drafting program. it allows you to do anything you want, with great control over how the drawings look, and many ways to organize a complete drawing set.

Cons

The software is expensive, and the annual updates add very little. Autocad as pretty much caught up in terms of object-based controls. and ability to make beautiful, robust, legible, intelligent 2D drawings. While the 3D is very intuitive, Rhino is more robust. And for BIM, it is hard to justify not using the industry standard software. So where is the edge for Vectorworks?
