“However, the one that I feel differentiates Speclink from other programs is it actively encourages the development of specifications organically throughout the entirety of a project - easily transitioning from Outline, to Short Form, to Full Specifications. “

### "Beneficial product"

June 24, 2025

5.0

Overall, I like the ease of use with SpecLink. With each new release, it gets better and continues to meet the needs of our Firm.

Pros

I love the Global Terms for quick edits and revisions rather than searching through multiple documents to make changes. It helps keep different sections referencing the same information from have accidental conflicts.

Cons

I want spell check to be on by default. Occasionally, SpecLink hangs up or something glitches, but the tech support is incredibly responsive and helpful.

### "Speclink Review"

May 27, 2025

3.0

My overall experience with Speclink is good. It is a solution to have all specs for all projects in one area. Would be nice if could have a process for spec deviations internal to the software.

Pros

Speclink allows for all specs to be consolidated space. The program is easy to use but does require some training.

Cons

Printing/exporting specs can sometimes be cumbersome. For those that are not familiar with the software it can be confusing to edit specs. Training required.

### "Great tool, as expected"

August 8, 2024

5.0

Sales talked a good game, and bragged on their support team. But they are right, Speclink support has been excellent. Most questions we have are already answered in short video clips or written guides. And those that aren't, they've answered very quickly.

Pros

Speclink allows our company to quickly prepare specifications. The linking process simplifies inclusion of relevant paragraphs based on product selection.

Cons

It is such a different workflow than Word-based spec editing, that our staff has resisted movement. We're continuing to win them over as they use the tool they like it.

### "SpecLink Program Excels"

August 7, 2024

5.0

As a SpecLink user for 6 years I have watched it improve with each release. The functionality and ease of use reduce the time spent correctly unforced errors. The ability to link a project to a BIM file is a plus. Technical support is better than any I have dealt with for other software. SpecLink makes it easier to train new specification writers how to do their job.

Pros

The links within and between sections reduce the number of "I forgot" errors.

Cons

The icons on the toolbar are difficult to understand and the toolbar itself is not intuitive as to where functions reside.

### "Bao Zao Lao Gou"

August 8, 2024

1.0

Was able to get it to function in part. Some features are simply too difficult. But the process was way too difficult. I have been writing specifications for 30 years and never had this much difficulty before.

Pros

It has many features. Glad to see some innovation.

Cons

The visual graphics do not correlate to the functionality in a linear way. Have to spend hours and hours trying to figure things out. Need more plain english instructions and to avoid utilizing different terminology for the same things. Simple linear instructions with constant names and definitions are needed. It almost seems like different parts of the program are written by different people that don't communicate the protocol with each other.

### "Speclink- The best project documentation tool available"

August 7, 2024

5.0

I've been using SpecLink for over 3 years. With almost 100 projects specified in SpecLink, we've proven its worth with increased project coordination, fewer change orders, and reduced production time. I would highly recommend SpecLink to any Architect or engineering firm.

Pros

Speclink eases the burden of mundane specification tasks. The automated updates and cross-specification formatting tools speed the finalization of the project manual and allow for a better product. Also, the depth and breadth of technical specification content (without being overly wordy) provides the ability for Clear, Correct, Concise, and Complete contract documents.

Cons

Speclink can improve the final assembly even further by integrating non text style document organization and greater assembly and change management options.

### "Robust Program for Editing and Managing Specifications"

June 24, 2025

5.0

Speclink has made my job as a specification writer much easier. The program is very robust and has a large database of boilerplate spec's along with side notes to help me understand each paragraph section better.

Pros

Speclink is a great product and very user friendly compared to more traditional forms of writing specifications. It is easily customizable to match your clients formatting. The paragraph sequencing and numbering are intuitive and adjust on the fly as each section is inserted/removed. Speclink also uses smart live linking for reference standards, crosslinked spec sections, and issue titles and dates. It is pretty easy to import spec's from other projects as well.

Cons

It is slightly difficult to learn at first.Overrides can be difficult especially with source and target linking. Moving paragraphs within a section can be cumbersome especially if there are embedded links.

### "A Vast Improvement Over MasterSpec"

June 24, 2025

5.0

Overall I am very pleased with the software, as it is a significant improvement over typical MasterSpec Word specifications.

Pros

The built-in automatic updating, choice fields, intelligent linking and overall ease of use of the interface are the main reasons we made the switch. Also, customer service and tech support is swift and responsive.

Cons

Sometimes the linking is faulty, especially for the Table of Contents. Also, we have provided a significant number of proposed enhancements, of which only a minor fraction have been implemented. Track changes need to be improved with more options. Network slowdown or browser memory limitations sometimes reduce performance. The RIB library of available sections needs to be increased to rival the MasterSpec library as there are still many scope items that do not exist in the RIB library.

### "Great Software For Spec Writing"

June 24, 2025

4.0

Overall it is a really great product with some excellent features. I have been writing specifications for just three years and have really come to appreciate your product and all of the features it offers.

Pros

It's a great baseline to start with for a variety of projects and products. I like the fact that all of the testing and standards are updated regularly, saving me hours of research time.

Cons

I find it sometimes difficult to customize spec sections to our needs. It would also be helpful to have more notes for each section, describing the real-world applications of different product selections. The specification strategies on some sections are cumbersome and difficult to navigate, i.e. they really don't help much.

### "SLC Review"

August 7, 2024

4.0

The automation of headers and exporting files is a huge timesaver, but getting the Office Masters built can be a time-consuming task, especially when production of Project Manuals is needed.

Pros

Once a master is built it, it streamlines the editing process, allowing more experienced staff to guide new spec writers through the use of Links and Choices.

Cons

The files from RIB are all incomplete (still need linking, if nothing else), and the logic of some Sections is confusing. I understand that they are built to accommodate a wide variety of client needs, but at its core, this is a program for specifications and should be built as such. For example, EVERY specification will have the Part titles of "Part 1" and "Part 3", but these are built as Suggestion Links. This is something that I correct every time. There are also a couple of Sections which seem to allow three different approaches to specifying, but one must figure this out and remove the options that don't work for their firm. If nothing else, NP headers of "This portion is for Basis of Design specifying" and "This portion is for performance specification" so that they parts can be understood would be a big help. More custom fields during export would also be helpful. Office Masters don't have the M and M\* functionality that would help identify where changes were made in a project. This would be helpful.

### "Toggle on, toggle off"

May 27, 2025

5.0

It is excellent. I really like it. The versatility is a wonderful experience and the ease of use makes it a breeze.

Pros

The ability to simply turn on or turn off content to be printed. No longer do I need to delete and add in different content for different projects, now i simply turn it off or turn it on. Brilliant.

Cons

Some of the content may be difficult to edit, without sufficient explanation. If something is locked by my management, it would be nice if a note popped up saying "This content locked by \[sensitive content hidden\]" or something

### "SpecLink will save your project time"

May 27, 2025

5.0

It's my go to and recommendation for spec generation for projects. The features (especially sheet specs!) have saved countless hours in coordination and printing.

Pros

Simple onboarding and usability. The cloud model is a fantastic way to collaborate and have multiple designers and spec writers reviewing the project.

Cons

Linking is very convoluted and difficult. There could be greater user-friendliness in linking another section, creating options for drop down menus. A modern UI/automation overhaul is needed for this feature.

### "Improvement from the old spec system "

June 25, 2025

5.0

Overall experience is a smoother process of spec-writing. Also appreciate that you can import similar specs from other projects (even if not originally created in SpecLink) and adjust accordingly.

Pros

Much improved spec-writing program compared to the old system. Provides a nice template for spec-writing, even offering suggestions, and makes it much less daunting and dry to go through. Also appreciate you can create projects within the program that encompass different specs, so you can keep things organized.

Cons

Headers and footers can be a challenge to edit and/or get editted to how you need them. Many of times our Clients have a specific company standard for how they want headers/footers shown (including specific colors for any revisions made) and this isn't as intuitive or smooth as I would like, but it is not a deal breaker given the many other capabilites of SpecLink elsewhere.

We have been using speclink for quite a few years. They are helpful with learning and always providing updates.

Pros

Speclink is such a useful tool. Very collaborative and easy to use! I find the importing word documents very useful. Lots of options to make it work how you want it.

### "Mostly Good System"

August 8, 2024

4.0

Overall experience with the system has been good. The RIB Tech Support is awesome. When needed they have been great.

Pros

Ability to maintain and office master with preselected options and have updates be able to occur without obliterating master edits.

Cons

Update process: Should be able to update references for the entire project with one click. Often the updates are changing behind the scenes actions. Reviewing them does not tell you what is happening. The text shows as the same. I have had preselected options disappear in my master due to update modifications I was not made aware of. If there is going to be a change to a background process it needs to be clearly explained. Global terms can not be removed if you EVER used them and the project is still in your active list. Inserting a linked Section id is too difficult. It should not require digging several layers deep into the adding choices interface. If an item has been edited and you try to edit it again sometimes it tells you there is a previous edit and you have to delete all user edits before you can add another edit. Other times it work as expected. I can not determine the difference. Difficulty to visually distinguish selected vs. unselected items. Switch between normal and active view should be a toggle, not drop-down. Sections list on menu bar does not maintain it's status of all or active sections.

Dear Randall, Thank you for your detailed feedback on RIB SpecLink. We're glad our Tech Support has been helpful and appreciate your insights on our system’s strengths and areas for improvement: Office Master Maintenance: We're pleased you find this feature beneficial, and we plan to enhance it further. Update Process: We understand the need for better transparency in tracking changes. Your concerns about reviewing updates and the loss of preselected options are valuable, and we'll work on this. ### "The most fun you can have writing specifications!"

August 7, 2024

5.0

Having worked with many approaches to specifications, RIB Speclink is by far my favorite. I'm comfortable that the data going into my specifications is up to date and reflective of current standards. I love the flexibility of the platform and the allowance of customization; the ability to see the entirety of sections in case I change my mind; the incorporation of both system and user notes. I could go on and on ... but it really is the most fun you can have writing specs!

Pros

It's tough to identify my favorite feature of Speclink because there are so many. However, the one that I feel differentiates Speclink from other programs is it actively encourages the development of specifications organically throughout the entirety of a project - easily transitioning from Outline, to Short Form, to Full Specifications. It also is a great tool to help younger designers become more thoughtful and intentioned as they can use Speclink as a great resource for product research that has already been done.

Cons

Like most things, benefits increase with effort - what you get out of Speclink is proportional to what you put in. This can often mean that within a larger organization, you can end up with a range of results. Yes, setting up standards can help, but there are always users that will stick with "out of the box" rather than leaning into the power of the program. This can create issues QAQC reviewers really need to be mindful of.

### "I mostly love Speclink!"

August 7, 2024

5.0

Very good- using for 10 years from subscription to on line. BTW, manufacturer illustrations were much better in the subscription versions

Pros

Ability to build and edit specs from prior projects

Cons

Importing manufacturer's 3 part specs or for that matter importing an edited spec file- absolutely inconsistent and much of the time does not work---why cant you include instructions on that?...its like a dark art

### "SpecLink is not just for full-time Specification Writers!"

June 27, 2024

5.0

Have been involved off and on since its beta testing 25 years ago and have been very pleased with the direction of the software's development, especially now with a construction-focused software developer like RIB.

Pros

Ease of use by those other than full-time specifiers. Unlike other specification writing software products, you are not forced into a process, you don't need to worry about copyright infringements, you don't lose anything while editing, being able to share access with outside consultants and Owners without additional licenses, importing of Revit files and reviewing their keynotes, and the concise text, which is both writer and reader friendly. The linking of paragraphs and Sections is a major advantage to assist the spec writer in quickly editing and coordinating the Sections. Output into any PageFormat and automated TOC's and reports, greatly reduces admin time.

Cons

Training other design professionals who are uncomfortable with the concise text and want to add unnecessary language to their Sections.

### "Almost perfect"

August 7, 2024

5.0

Pros

I like the ease of it, in general. I like the export options, too.

Cons

I wish that there was a "deselect all" button when I am copying from out master spec, so that I can deselect everything and only select what I need, or perhaps an option to make that selection before it copies. I also think that the headers and footers could be a little more intuitive. It might be user error, but I find them a little difficult at times.
