June 9, 2023 5.0 Once I learned how to uncover information, especially in the 990 reports, this became an awesome tool that I use almost daily. Even for some of our existing, long-time funders, to be able to see who they are giving to, when they are giving, all in one place, is really valuable. Pros The amount of information, especially how they have broken out 990 information and where funders have given to in the past, is phenomenal and saves hours, if not days, worth of work. To have so much information at our fingertips is a great tool. And through the search functions, we have found several good propects - if we land one the service will more than pay for itself. Cons The search function is broad and generates so many results it takes awhile to sift through them all to find opportunities that are truly feasible, but I'd rather have it that way than not kick back results we could have found on our own. Reason for choosing Instrumentl Loved the 990 features, loved that they gave me a free trial to give it a strong test drive and love their customer service, which is responsive, smart and kind. May 31, 2023 5.0 I have been able to streamline searches to specific program needs, and the customer service/support has been excellent. Pros The amount of information that is given on the granting foundations sent your way, from the number of grant awards given, to the number of new grantees considered, as well as the background and history of the foundations is extremely helpful. Cons Rather than just being alerted by email, I would like somewhere on the Master Tracker page notification of grant matches for each category listed. February 22, 2023 5.0 I had exhausted the foundations on my current directory and sought new ones, which subsequently appeared on the lists I received from Instrumentl. The information was clear and easy to access, and the customer support was excellent. I do not currently use many of the tracking features but will consider additional software that ties my record keeping to our Salesforce database. Pros While the information it produces is superior, Instrumentl's most impactful feature is its 990 summaries. I also like receiving updates, reminder emails regarding deadlines, and support from the staff in creating projects. Cons This isn't terribly important, but it could be a little more graphically pleasing--brighter colors, bolder lines. Pros The best function of Instrumentl for me is the record number of funding opportunities I find through their software. Cons I haven't found a con within Instrumentl to date. I will always go to it first for any grant research I conduct. I highly recommend it to anyone who needs to find grants. Pros I like that instrumentl connects me to donors I would never find on other platforms and then sends excellent updates and news about the grant and/or donor. Cons I wish it would allow for for-profit organizations to seek grants. I consult with some for profit groups that are also eligible for funding and that would be a good component to add. Pros Instumentl's "system" provides fresh institutional funding prospects "on the regular" and puts them into my field of vision. It's a comprehensive and clean search engine for institutional funding and I like that. Cons It works fine for my purposes...which could best be described as a "very smart tickler file and research library." February 14, 2023 5.0 Instrumentl has helped us to amplify positive community change! We support social and environmental justice projects by providing an administrative home and 501c3 fiscal sponsorship to community-led projects and initiatives. We have been able to help our sponsored projects and our Tiny Seed organization fundraise! It has been a game-changer for our work. Pros The grant and foundation-seeking aspects are extremely helpful. We manage 12 different projects on our subscription, which has helped us to help our sponsored projects with fundraising. It is very easy to use, and provides so much information about potential funders! Cons Integration went smoothly. My only suggestion is to sync the deadline with the grant application status. For example, I created a submission goal, and then submitted the grant application earlier than my deadline. Even after the grant was submitted and I changed the status in the drop-down menu, when the grant submission deadline arrived it put a red notice that I missed the deadline. Grant Development Associate Mental Health Care Used the software for: 6-12 months ### "Best tool out there" October 31, 2022 5.0 Overall, this is by far the best grant finding tool on the market - it has only gotten better since I personally started using this product 18 months ago, and my company loves it. Especially if you have a small grants team or no grants team, you need to invest in this! Pros Instrumentl is such a quality tool, so efficient in that we can research, track applications and manage awards and reporting all in place - a great way to house all this in one spot for smaller nonprofits like our Foundation! They are always making improvements and customer support is great. The automatic refreshing alerts me to new opportunities for our projects, so I never miss a good funding opportunity. Saves so much time and is worth your investment! Cons As we have a lot of projects, the page layout gets pretty messy and confusing; I don't like the inability to expand views out to the whole page. A desktop app would be nice, so that the view isn't limited to the browser page size. I also don't like that we can't sort projects by name, goal, etc.; it can be hard to find the right project on the left-hand size when you have to scroll through all of them on such a small window pane. February 14, 2023 5.0 My overall experience is that is easy to learn and maintain, easy to locate grants and the customer service is awesome. They also host training sessions which have been very informative and helpful. They are always willing to help and extremely responsive in getting back with you if you need help. Pros Instrumentl is very easy to learn and operate. It makes looking for grants easy and keeping track of them even easier. It is also user friendly for users of different generations. Cons I would like some more sub-categories in "Field of Work" that were more specific to my field. However, I have not had much trouble finding what I need. Reason for choosing Instrumentl Our grant team is multi-generational and it is easy to learn and use. It also incorporates all the features that I wanted in a platform; tracking, reminders, document library and more. Gave us more tools at our fingertips and more time to be able to focus on other tasks since Instrumental does so much of the leg work for us! Pros This software saves hours of searching for grants, and even more so by finding ones that may directly benefit your organization. They go step by step with you and teach you how to use the software making it super easy to use! We have been able to spend more time focusing on grants that have the ability to support us and it was a transition that seemed to take a load off of our shoulders! Cons Once you learn how to do everything, it is easy to use. Just have to be patient and follow the information in the zoom. The only thing I really wish was different was that there was some way the it could automatically change status to awarded when grant received, or in progress when application was being worked on. Pros Instrumentl really helped our small nonprofit up our grants game. Before this program, we were using Excel spreadsheets to track our grant submissions, and subscriptions to sites like Charity Navigator to search for new grant opportunities. Having one place where we can run (and save!) searches for grants, get a great initial research-overview on the prospect, and manage the grantseeking process is truly beneficial. I recommend Instrumentl to nonprofit colleagues all the time! Cons Sometimes with the way the search parameters work, as a nonprofit that serves multiple states, we'll get "matched" with grants for which we don't actually qualify (e.g. we serve Texas, but the opportunity might require your 501(c)3 to be \*based\* in Texas, which we're not) and there doesn't seem to be a workaround for that. But pretty much every other question/suggestion I've brought to the Instrumentl team, they've addressed! Reminders are most helpful, especially for a small team. Pros Instrumentl came on the scene when we were frustrated by the clunkiness of other grant research and management products. It offers user-friendly, clear ways to research and manage the grant process. The team at Instrumentl is focused on making sure the product is responsive to user needs and seems to be continually innovating. Customer service is also a priority, which is very important to us. Cons One feature they did away with was offering a team of vetted grant writers from which to choose to work with on a contract basis. We found our wonderful grant manager through this feature. It's a high-quality database that offers opportunities to explore options and edit projects easily on an ongoing basis. Pros Most SAS programs are written by software designers and aren't always intuitive for end-users - Instrumentl is obviously actually created by grant writers who understand what the people who will be using the product actually need it to do. Our company has made several requests while we've had Instrumentl and the development team has been incredibly responsive in making changes that make the product more useful for our team. Cons We are consultants who do a lot more than grant writing, we still need to use project management software for our other projects, otherwise we would be using only Instrumentl because it tracks every aspect of grant prospecting to management. I love the webinars offered. They provide frequent webinars to share updates on the platform as well as best practices in the grant writing domain. The platform is intuitive. You can quickly dive deep to learn about a funder. Or you can glean the main information you need to know about a funder such as; its median grant size and location of grantees provide a quick overview. Pros I especially like the emails sent from Instrumentl that share new grant funding opportunities that fit our projects. I also like the ease of the platform and the extensive information it has on each grant funder. Cons I do not have any true negatives about the software. There's really nothing I don't like about it, but what I am currently working to see added would be the ability to file documents in folders. And links to funder websites make deeper evaluation easy. Cons Due dates on LOI's can trigger a "past due" notice on a grant that is incorrect. This can be distracting.
