### "If you do your own payroll, use this."

August 24, 2022

4.0

I do payroll for 3 businesses. All under 20 employees. It only takes a few hours for each one to complete payroll. I am self taught and have managed to master it. I'm sure glad Intuit has a payroll option so we can keep our expenses down. BUT you have to be sure to file those quarterlies and end of year reports. You also have to be sure you put your tax money where you won't spend it. You don't want to have the IRS on your tail.

Pros

It's easy! What you don't understand, customer service will guide you through it. Once payroll is set up, it really is automatic.

Cons

It's easy to use but difficult to set up. You might want to have QB help you get started. They will do that as part of your subscription. A lot of payroll is actually manual - entering time, paying and submitting taxes, setting up garnishments, etc. My personal opinion is if you are a large business, you should probably let a payroll company do your payroll.

### "QB Payroll helps streamline the payroll process"

May 18, 2022

5.0

Since switching from a manual payroll system to QB Payroll we have saved time, our employees are receiving their money quicker, our financial reporting is more accurate, and our payroll taxes are filed on time with little effort.

Pros

I like that QB Payroll reminds me when deadlines are approaching, has many pre-set forms included, processes payroll accurately and timely, and provides multiple formats for reporting.

Cons

QB Payroll does not allow an easy way to print prior year form W2. It only saves one year form W2 at a time. Sometimes I would like to print a prior year quickly and cannot.

### "A User for Over 20 Years "

September 6, 2022

5.0

I have been using it for a very long time and am familiar with almost everything it has to offer even if I don't use some features. On a weekly use for 2 companies, it makes doing payroll fast and simple when using time sheets. It has some unfriendly features if you deviate from doing payroll that way -- like doing separate bonus checks, corporate officer year end checks, or anything that's not set as a regularly weekly paycheck. Some of the wording is confusing when doing those checks.

Pros

It's relatively easy to use once you set it up and take the time to understand the tax lines to which expenses, income, payroll, etc should be assigned. Once you learn how to use it and custom your reports, it saves time and the data from years back can be accessed.

Cons

It gets too complicated in generating reports. If you only use the reports as QB configures them, you won't get the most accurate view of the business. And I do NOT like the password being required on my own device. I want to decide that for myself. It's a real pain to have to log into a device that only I use even if you can set it for 90 days. I don't want to do that at all.

Reason for choosing QuickBooks Payroll

We didn't consider anything else. If we had, I would be doing payroll in Exel.

### "Overall A Good Payroll Software for Small Businesses"

November 16, 2022

5.0

Pros

Very easy to use for both the employer and employees. You can add different admin users along with changing access, if some admins don't need access to everything. It is very user friendly and walks you through step by step on each and every part of the payroll process. This is the first software I ever used when starting in the payroll department, and had 0% training on it. I was able to navigate my way through it with no help.

Cons

The direct deposit limit is what made me change payroll software. I could not pay all of my employees via direct deposit because of the limit they had on our account.

### "Do NOT get this service"

May 1, 2021

1.0

For the major problems described above, I would not recommend this product to any small business. There are many very good payroll services that are more user friendly, customer orientated and WILLING TO HELP. These guys are the fat cat who could care less about you, your needs, your business. They act like they are doing you a favor for the chance of doing business with them. Good example - we had a problem on the last day of filing and? They closed their customer service. No help. Period. If you have to file late and get fined, too bad. They also screwed up the direct deposits. This is a unreliable service.

Pros

Basic payroll features all present to list employees info, etc. No problem there. Best feature is that it was embedded into our online Quick Books.

Cons

the WORST feature of this service which makes it a FAILURE for small business is the inflexibility and rigidity of deadlines. For example the last month of a QTR ends and next day you want to enter data, or even make a small change, for the previous week, or month or quarter - TOO BAD - you can not. Period. No compromise. No hope. Be clear this is ARBITRARY. But they could care less. The Federal filing deadline is 30 days after the end of Qtr. If there is a fixed deadline afterwhich you can not makes changes it should be that. But for some ego power trip reason (meaning no REAL reason) they make it the next day. If you don't keep up to that arbitrary schedule then FU. There is no customer service to help. You have to submit changes in writing and wait 2 weeks. Yes you are paying PREMIUM rate for this service but they don't care. Its like they are deliberately trying to screw you. Same with end of year. Most small business use month of Jan to get their books together. Sorry. By Jan 1 you must have all your payroll done. There is no possibility to enter any data after Dec 31....again....even tho the REAL deadline (Feds) in Jan 31. The small convenience of seeing this inside your online Quick Books is not worth the problems.

Reason for choosing QuickBooks Payroll

we mistakenly thought QB Payroll would be as easy and user friendly as QB itself - IT IS NOT. It is a separate operation. Only overlap is you can access them both on same screen. Not worth it based on our direct small business experience. There are other better more flexible services willing to help you. these guys don't want to help. If you need help, tough luck.

### "QuickBooks Payroll In A Nutshell"

August 24, 2021

5.0

It was a good software to use but it was a bit of an overkill for me, meaning that it cost me a lot to maintain its use in my business versus the overall impact it was making. As a micro business, I was better off with something more cost-effective than QuickBooks.

Pros

QuickBooks certainly has a lot of features that you can tap into such as a certified HR advisor, they have benefits plans that you can bundle up into your package and you can have live bookkeeping experts that help you maintain your records which is a great resource if you're not quite confident in that field yet.

Cons

You might as well get the Elite package, or you'll end up being told (by customer support) to buy an add on feature every time you query something about the software that you thought would've been included... including the customer support itself. The 24/7 Expert Product Support only comes with the elite package which is a $125/month fee but covers all of your payroll needs.

Reason for choosing QuickBooks Payroll

My manager at my previous job (which was a nationwide chain store) told me that QuickBooks was what we were using in-store so I chose it based on that recommendation.

### "You Can't Do Any Better than Quickbooks When It Comes to Managing Your Payroll"

January 13, 2023

5.0

Excellent. I owned my business for 25 years and that business was actually a beta tester for Quickbooks when they were first developing a business version of Quicken. If you don't need the cumbersomeness of a double-entry accounting software system, Quickbooks is the first option I always recommend to others.

Pros

It's easy to use and is excellent accounting software for small-to-mid-size businesses that need complete payroll services. The tax tables are regularly updated, the options to file your tax forms via your online accounts is the best.

Cons

The desktop version of Quickbooks is $500/year which is a fair amount of money.

Reason for choosing QuickBooks Payroll

I used to manage the payroll for 25 employees back in the 1970s - it would take me an entire day to collect all the hours, calculate the withholding taxes using paper tax tables, and write all the checks. It would take another full day to get all of the quarterly payroll tax forms calculated and filed. When Quickbooks came out with Quickbooks Payroll in the 1980s, it streamlined all of these processes and procedures within a single system. It has since added direct deposit which is an enormous benefit for both the company and the employees and online reporting/deposit which again has been an enormous benefit. For a small-to-mid-size company, I don't think you can do any better than with Quickbooks Payroll.

Overall this is a positive experience. Clients really like this service that we offer them. It helps us keep an eye on our clients and lets them track and help keep their overhead costs in line for their company. The ease of use for them is outstanding and makes paying their employees simple and easy.

Pros

We like this product due to its easy use for our clients that we sell it to for their use.Easy to manage reports and functionality.

Cons

sometimes the reporting doesn't seem to populate properly and you have redo the report parameters. Can be a little glitchy at times (but technology can do that)

### "QuickBooks Payroll a good choice for all but the smallest of small businesses"

April 27, 2022

5.0

A reliable and accurate service providing pretty much everything the small business needs to generate a payroll and to remit taxes and tax filings in a timely basis. Good customer service. When new state taxes were introduced, it was sometimes difficult to get the calculation of taxes due correct and, in my case, QuickBooks was never able to successfully remit the Washington Family & Medical Leave tax.

Pros

A comprehensive online payroll service likely to meet the needs of most small businesses with good integration to other products and services sold by QuickBooks. Easy setup, good customer service. I liked being able to schedule so that payroll taxes were deducted from my corporate account close to the date the remittance was due to the taxing authority. Some payroll services deduct taxes from the bank account just after payroll is run, then hold it (presumably making interest on those funds) until the taxes are actually due. QuickBooks doesn't appear to do that.

Cons

A few too many steps are required to run a payroll with a few informational messages being displayed that I usually disregard (of the "are you sure you want to do that?" kind). Also, QuickBooks was never able to successfully report and remit certain of Washington's state taxes. QuickBooks' calculation of these taxes never quite matched the calculation made by the state taxing authority and correcting QuickBooks' record of what I actually paid was a bit complicated. Also, the price for this service is not competitive, compared to other services, for very small businesses.

Reason for choosing QuickBooks Payroll

At the time I started with QuickBooks Payroll, they had an arrangement through Costco that provided the service at a very competitive rate. Once that arrangement ended, however, QuickBooks price was a good deal higher than their competitors, for my very small business.

### "Slow Change Yields Quick Results "

October 26, 2021

4.0

Quickbooks Payroll's payroll management has been a necessary and vital part of our ability to operate. We grew quickly as an organization and increased our staff by over 400% in less than two years. We had an accounting and payroll system that was designed for paying three employees. It had already become problematic when we increased to 8 full time employees. When we increased to 25 employees, the inadequacy of our system became glaringly apparent. Mistakes in payroll, reporting, and compliance began to put our organization in jeopardy. We initially utilized an accounting firm, but the costs of their services was a budget item that we could not continue to maintain without reducing staff or increasing fees. Quickbooks Payroll solves this problem, allowing us to maintain our entire staff, keep our fees the same, and stay in compliance with the IRS, all for a fee that annually is less than we had been paying monthly.

Pros

Quickbooks Payroll eliminates our need for an accountant to oversee our payroll operations, and gives us the ability to accurately pay our employees, maintain tax compliance, print W2s and weekly payroll checks, and maintain necessary financial records. The cost of using this software pales in comparison to the fees we were quoted from multiple accounting firms. Most important for our organization, it yields professional results while requiring minimal accounting knowledge on the part of the user. The combination of saving money and maintaining compliance has made the transition to Quickbooks Payroll one of our most successful business moves.

Cons

Our only complaint is that we waited so long to realize how much we needed this software. I have spoken with several colleagues who work at similar facilities, and none of them utilize this software. Moreover, they don't realize how much they could benefit from switching to it. I wish Quicken would make a targeted effort to demonstrate the benefits of this software to our industry.

### "The best payroll software I'm aware of"

December 31, 2019

5.0

I use Quickbooks Payroll for multiple organizations to process all aspects of payroll. I have used it for employees in four different states. I've already mentioned how useful it is in automatically calculating and tracking everything. I also use it to prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual reports for government tax agencies. I especially appreciate the ability to e-file several tax reports and e-pay some taxes as well. Each year I prepare and file employees' w-2s using Quickbooks Payroll, which makes the process fairly simple.

Pros

My favorite thing about Quickbooks payroll also happens to be the most important thing about it...it is accurate! The payroll tax rates and rules are always updated to maintain accuracy in a changing landscape. When processing payroll, everything is automatically calculated and tracked for accuracy - including annual salary, vacation and/or sick pay, holiday pay, withholding tax, and unemployment tax. I don't have to worry about manually calculating things, knowing when there are tax changes, or potentially making mistakes.

Cons

I most dislike how expensive Quickbooks Payroll is. I only use the Enhanced Payroll subscription that integrates with existing Quickbooks desktop software or Quickbooks online subscription. That means I do all of actual work in processing payroll and payroll taxes, rather than using a more full-service option. I think the (ever increasing) several hundred dollars per year it costs to have the subscription is unreasonable. (In addition there's a separate fee for each direct deposit check.) However, the truth is, I rely so much on the functions of Quickbooks payroll that I continue utilizing it despite the cost complaints. I haven't come across anything better so I feel I have no choice.

### "There are better payroll products out there even if your CPA insists on using Quickbooks"

July 7, 2022

2.0

Pros

I like that it integrates into Quickbooks which the CPA insists we use for accounting.

Cons

3 times out of no where direct deposit would stop working, I could not process payroll except by check, and I would have to call Intuit and spend 1+ hours with some clueless tech support agent that couldn't use their own tools (Salesforce / force.com ) to upload a copy of my ID so a team that can't be contacted could verify my account, only to have to repeat this every 6 months. I got stuck having to fly home from vacation to manually runs checks once. Got hit with penalties for payroll tax not filled on time. I escalated my issue multiple times no once could give me answers (I suspect it was related to a name change that happened from when I bought it 5 years ago to when I got married) and eventually I switched to Rippling which does way more, and has excellent support.

### "Quickbooks Assisted Payroll - Great for small businesses"

April 21, 2021

4.0

Overall, it's been great for our company. As mentioned above, their customer service needs some help. Other than that, their payroll service has helped a tremendously, in keeping track of everything needed to comply to State and Federal filing and tax deadlines. I would recommended it as a tool to help ease the work for your payroll person in the office.

Pros

I like the ease of the payroll service. We have a small number of employees, yet prior to QuickBooks, sometimes quarterly payroll taxes were mis-calculated. With QuickBooks Assisted Payroll, we do not ever have to worry about sending in payments, as they are done for us automatically. W-2 are no longer a headache either, they are don't quickly and generated seamlessly.

Cons

When we do have issues, customer service is not to par. They stopped service many of their payroll services and when you do, you do get switched around a lot and many seem to not know the basics of payroll. - I wouldn't recommend their services if you need step by step help on processing your company payroll.

Reason for choosing QuickBooks Payroll

Not Applicable; we were manually doing payroll prior to QuickBooks Payroll.

All in all, QB's Payroll has made my life easier because it is so easy to use and with the automation feature it provides more time for other tasks since I spend less time doing payroll or making tax payments.

Pros

Compared to doing this process manually, QuickBooks payroll is amazing and easy to use. It requires very little staff time as well.

Pros

I like that you can essentially automate everything from payroll runs to filings and payments. Once the client and employees are setup within Payroll, the only work I have to do is review everything every month and save copies of returns to provide to my clients.

Cons

The setup process can be a little confusing/ time consuming at first. However, once you go through 1-2 iterations, it is a pretty straightforward process.

### "If you want more time to do other tasks - then utilize QB Payroll!"

April 21, 2023

5.0

Business owner likes the cost effectiveness and the timely manner in which payroll reporting and taxes are filed on company's behalf. Personally, as the payroll processor, it makes my task time next to nothing to process payroll for the staff. The staff is gracious for the ease of their direct deposits as well as their own portal to retrieve their paystubs and payroll information.

Pros

Ease and flow of understanding. I personally have done payroll for more than 25 years, but even someone who has no payroll experience can be a payroll wizard with Quickbooks payroll processing!

Cons

That previous employers didn't utilize it. It can assist the payroll administrator position and hold hands beautifully.

Reason for choosing QuickBooks Payroll

Hands-on, in-house experience was more important to management and me, as the payroll processor. Quickbooks payroll ASSISTS instead of taking over TOTAL control as a service such as ADP would.

It's critical in any business to have your employees be able to depend on consistent and accurate pay. That's all they ask of their employer. I consider it my highest obligation to make sure and get this right for them.

Pros

Cons

### "Quickbooks Payroll Update removes customization abilities"

August 5, 2021

4.0

Over the last 4 years of I have enjoyed the way Quickbooks works with my bank transactions and credit card transactions. I like the variety of reports that can be created and the ease with which bank accounts can be reconciled but the latest updates to payroll have made it impossible to make customizations and has made Quickbooks boss of my payroll. I should not have to have permission from my software provided to make changes to my company's business.

Pros

I have enjoyed the simplicity of using Quickbooks payroll for the last 4 years but the most recent update has made it much more difficult to use. I can no longer make any customizations on my own. I can not exempt employees from taxes we as a church are exempt from paying. I have to call customer service to have all customizations made by them.

Cons

No ability to customize payroll exemptions and no ability to override reminder notices. Our accountant files all of our payroll reports but Quickbooks does not allow to make the tasks as completed if you have not completed the task with their system. I have to call and ask them to archive (even they can not mark them complete) the reminders to remove them from my Home Screen. I am not hiring Quickbooks to be my accountant but to be my software provider and I resent them placing requirements on my use of the system.

### "Quickbooks Payroll don't be fooled"

December 29, 2020

1.0

If you have a simple payroll this is not a terrible product. If you have employees in multiple states, I would not recommend.

Pros

The integration with Quickbooks online was a key factor. It is also very easy to use once the setup is complete.

Cons

The customer service is non-existent. I have a client that uses the full service payroll, and if there is an error where Quickbooks is at fault, it is impossible to ever get them to pay for the error, they will admit the responsibility, but they will not pay for the responsibility. The customer service is tiered so you never speak to a decision maker even when the error is a significant dollar amount. I had this issue in two cases. 1. Quickbooks processed a duplicate payroll costing my client $15,000+ and despite full documentation that they were responsible, they would not pay for the error. 2. I set up a new client on full service payroll with employees in the state of Nevada. QB did not support filing one of the taxes required for the state. They did not disclose this and admitted that they did not disclose at the beginning nor did they prompt the client to file the return when it came due. Quickbooks did take responsibility for the error by admitting it, but they would not take responsibility for the taxes and penalties.

### "They are so large now they make it difficult to speak with someone. "

April 30, 2021

1.0

In the beginning the customer service was great, but over the years it has deteriorated. I still have on going issues where the mistaken filed my taxes under the wrong id number (the number was transposed) creating a issue with our Dept of labor unknow to me until years later. After, numerous calls, speaking to someone the issue is still a problem. Hey, mistakes happen lets just get it fixed. Now my employees have not received their pay, and now no one is available to let you know the issue.

Pros

When everything is good, things are great. But, when you have problem, (and you will sometime) they make it so difficult to get answers and issues resolved. When you a problem it will be a big issue and no one is around to help. You try chat, most of the time that doesn't resolve the issue, or question you may have. Have them call you back, that may or may not happen, but it won't happen in the time they indicate. Its been a great run with Quickbooks Pro (paid more for better Full service) but it looks as if that is coming to an end. The icing on the cake for me was, not getting my employees paid on the date they were supposed to be, though receiving correspondence they would be paid. Trying to get answers to what the issue is, and you can't get a hold of anyone. That creates a game changer.

Cons

Software is great, but if you don't have customer service to support the software, the software become worthless. Because you will have issues and will need help.

### "Does the job but not my favorite"

April 26, 2023

3.0

Fine. It does the job of running payroll but that is all.

Pros

It does the basic functions of payroll and taxes. Great product if that's all you're doing, good for very small teams without HR.

Cons

Not the best user experience (you constantly go back to the main page when you have to change things, it's not very intuitive to use). If you're looking for something for everything HR, this is not the product. This is easy to use to run payroll but add anything else (benefits, time, etc.) and it is clunky and time consuming.
