### "The Ultimate Solution for Data-Driven Research Teams!"

October 14, 2024

5.0

Importing data from CSV files and video recordings is incredibly straightforward, making our workflow so much smoother. My team and I are absolutely loving our journey with Dovetail, and we can't wait to explore all the amazing features it has to offer!

Pros

I'm excited to share my experience with Dovetail! This user research data repository is constantly evolving, and the enhancements—especially with the addition of AI—truly elevate the experience! It’s clear that the team genuinely cares about making data manipulation easier with every update.

Cons

For those storing research data in places like Figma the migration of old insights is slow and manual.

### "The leading UXR qualitative analysis tool"

October 30, 2024

5.0

Dovetail streamlines working with qualitative data. It automates transcription. It now even has automatic meeting import. It suggests highlights. It has AI analysis tools. All of the raw data is flexible and can be arranged into interactive reports (insights) for quick building, and engaging content. This means I'm not spending time editing video clips, downloading and uploading things, or tabbing through all the interviews separately to find themes. I can look at the themes, tags, and interesting quotes from a birds eye view to catch patterns. I've built out a robust repository in Dovetail, and it's been a godsend for answering the question of "what do we know about X". Previous research is just a few clicks away instead of trying to remember what dusty archive it was stored in. Because I use a global taxonomy, I also can leverage that, filters, and magic search to get to some very nuanced questions.

Pros

The best part about Dovetail is how seamlessly I can curate and share user insights with stakeholders. No video editing, no downloading and uploading of video clips. I just pop the most interesting moments into my reports, into Slack (with integration support), into comments, and there they are. I'm using Dovetail for multiple hours every day. They provide a wide set of tools to look at your interview data (and now also surveys, NPS, tickets, etc), and synthesize it from a birds eye view. If you're trying to build a dynamic, ever growing repository, Magic Search is a gamechanger for finding what you need amidst the reams of data. It's largely stakeholder friendly and has definitely made some jaws drop when I've shown them how to use it. Finally, the Dovetail team itself is exceptionally responsive to feedback and has built a lovely community of research-minded folks. It's very clear that they're building based on what we're saying, and they take suggestions very seriously

Cons

Pricing. Some of the features (workspace tag boards namely) that we leaned on in previous years on a Team plan (legacy) got locked behind their Business plan. It was a near 4x leap in costs to maintain parity with what we had before to maintain our existing repository structure. They've been developing many new AI-powered features that are recouping some of that value, but those are available on ALL paid plans, so it feels a bit hard to justify the shift (or at least it stung dearly as an existing customer). As a tool, Dovetail definitely has some learning curves. Stakeholders usually need significant hand-holding to learn how to leverage the tool, both as a viewer or a contributor.

### "Worthless pile of junk"

May 9, 2023

1.0

I spent 8+ hours "tagging" nearly 20 research interviews, come to find out I can't generate any meaningful reports with the data I just transcribed and tagged. No easy way to show who answered what, let alone calculate percentages or totals (used Google Sheets for this instead). In all, an entire waste of time and money.Stick to Google Spreadsheets and save the time and headache!

Pros

Transcriptions. Oh, and they had a clean salesy website with no substance or value after that (an empty promise).

Cons

\- Charts are impossible to use- Terrible data visualizations- Worthless help articles- Clueless support

### "The Best for Product to Design "

October 17, 2024

5.0

From customer support to the use of the tool, I would be incredibly sad if I could not use this tool. I have used a few tools, but nothing is like Dovetail.

Pros

I have not seen another tool that can help with analysis and keep research organized, like Dovetail. As a UX Researcher and former Product Manager, this is one of my favorite tools. I can clearly see pain points, themes, and more, while clearly organizing my notes, transcripts, and calls with tags. It is easily accessible to design and product, and it saves tons of time in workflows. I would be incredibly at a loss without it.

Cons

I wish initial onboarding had 2-3 calls to set up properly as it does affect adoption if your tags are not set up correctly.

### "Enables beautiful reports, video clips, and roll-ups of information"

October 15, 2024

4.0

Pros

Dovetail has well thought-out flexibility and functionality. I like that I can tag information and then see it together, and that they're always making intuitive updates to the functionality (for example, the Canvas format has come strides since it was first released).

Cons

Taxonomizing and tagging the information is a challenge that Dovetail does not provide a lot of support for. They suggest leading workshops across teams, but at a company of 100k+ employees and low UX maturity, this is not realistic. I also get nervous about the focus they're putting on AI. I'm all for adopting new technology, but the AI features are annoying, unreliable, inaccurate, and now I can't easily search for simple information like in what Notes the word "bulk" appeared. It doesn't always make sense to semantic search for insights across products when I'm looking for very specific information.

Reason for choosing Dovetail

### "The best on the market, hands down"

October 14, 2024

5.0

I’ve been using Dovetail for years; I first became a user when I acquired and implemented it at a Series C startup as their first and only UXR. I’m continually impressed with their dedication to iterating on its features and functionalities. I really appreciate their community channel where we can ask questions, give feedback, and make feature requests. Dovetail has done taxonomy right from the start, which is the most important aspect of a repository tool. The maturity of the analysis features has grown a ton in the last year alone, especially with their introduction of AI—even now expanding it to auto-tagging and tagging suggestions. For me, one of the most exciting things in the pipeline for Dovetail 3.0 is better support for survey data. It’s a good starting point, and I look forward to how they scale it to support large surveys. I was recently on a contract with a company that has extremely outdated tooling… it was painful to go from doing work that previously took me a few hours with Dovetail to then it takes me many days. Thankfully I still use Dovetail for my volunteer and side projects... but yea, I gained a new level of appreciation for Dovetail this year. It’s the best on the market and certainly worth the investment if you have the budget.

Pros

\- Best approach to building taxonomies - Listen to their customers - Address any problems quickly - Search and analysis capabilities are comprehensive

Cons

\- \* Previously \* their sentiment analysis was very bad, but they've since significantly improved and releasing much better AI supported tagging - \* Previously \* had basically no way to properly handle survey data, but I found good work arounds. They're releasing functionalities designed for surveys in Dovetail 3.0 which is super exciting! It's best for smaller surveys, but I'm confident they're going to expand it over time to be even better.

### "Good for qualitative analysis, not great for insights discoverability"

October 14, 2024

4.0

Pros

Dovetail is a great platform to analyze qualitative data from user interviews. We use it for all qualitative research projects, at least 2-3 times a month. The platform offers many solutions to improve the efficiency and accuracy of this process, such as automated transcripts, tags, and AI features to detect relevant quotes and help organize data. They also provide project templates so the platform is easy to use and implement. Their customer support is great and always provides helpful resources.

Cons

Qualitative data analysis: While Dovetail is pretty good on this front already, they could add a few features to make this process easier. - Speakers in the transcripts are not automatically assigned. - There is no way to timestamp the notes so it's challenging to use and understand them in the context of the interview. - There is no way to write down insights as you analyze the transcript. - We need to manually add transcripts from Google Drive which is time-inefficient. - Create AI summaries and look for relevant themes with AI based on provided hypotheses we try to test during research. - Based on provided hypotheses and interview transcripts, provide assessment of how well we were able to address the hypotheses in the interview, what we can improve in the script to do it better, and notes for improvement for the facilitator. Research repository: Insights in Dovetail are not easily discoverable. - No way to tag insights, - No way to save search filters for others to use, - No way to see all research in a simple, easy to navigate view.

### "Dovetail's Customization & Variety of Tools Makes it an Excellent "Research Partner""

October 17, 2024

5.0

Pros

I have utilized Dovetail at two distinct organizations, assisting with the implementation of the tool in both instances. I am consistently impressed by Dovetail's dynamic personalization features, especially its customizable folder hierarchy and project permissions. When introducing teammates to Dovetail for the first time, I highlight the platform's capability as a "one-top-shop" solution for all research needs and workflows.

Cons

I appreciate Dovetail for its commitment to continuously improving its features while actively incorporating real user feedback to evolve the platform. Our customer service representative consistently addresses our concerns and feature requests with thoroughness and is prompt in providing us with the necessary answers. There is nothing in particular that I dislike about Dovetail - rather, I have a list of "Even Better Ifs" that would enhance my usage of the platform, which I've been able to easily submit to the Dovetail team.

Our organization struggled with insight findability when we used our previous system. Navigation was not highly customizable or intuitive and required a lot of hand-holding when it came to getting stakeholders the information they needed out of the repository. Dovetails customizability and intuitiveness has largely remedied this issue, thus making insights more impactful and reducing "duplicate" efforts.

### "My Go-to research platform"

October 14, 2024

5.0

I’ve had a very positive experience with Dovetail and have introduced it to at least four companies. Having a reliable research data repository and a tool that accelerates the research workflow is essential, and Dovetail delivers on both fronts.

Pros

I am a long time user of Dovetail. I’ve been using it for qualitative data analysis since 2021, and it has significantly improved my workflow and efficiency as a qualitative researcher. Before switching to Dovetail, I used Google Docs with a makeshift plugin to export insights to Google Sheets. I’ve also experimented with Miro, but nothing compares to Dovetail’s ease of analysis. I’m especially excited about the upcoming 3.0 release, with its new AI features that I hope will further accelerate my work.

Cons

I'm super excited about what’s to come with Dovetail 3.0. Can't wait to see the new features. I’m hoping that manual tagging of every interview becomes a thing of the past, with the AI able to identify patterns based on just 2-3 interviews and auto-code the rest according to themes predefined by the researcher. The "human in the loop" principle is crucial to me, and I’m hopeful that Dovetail 3.0 will make this leap.

### "From Feedback Chaos to Clarity with Dovetail"

October 13, 2024

5.0

Dovetail has proven to be an essential tool for Catarse as we navigate a complete redesign and evolution of our crowdfunding platform. With a vast amount of user feedback coming in, organizing and prioritizing it could have been a daunting task. Thanks to Dovetail, we’ve been able to stay focused on what matters, ensuring we prioritize the most impactful changes. It’s been an incredible asset to our process.

Pros

We’ve been using Dovetail to collect, organize, and analyze all our user interviews. Previously, managing interviews and feedback was time-consuming, but now we just upload the video, and Dovetail handles the transcription. Its AI-powered features help us quickly understand key feedback points. Recently, we connected Dovetail directly to our Zendesk, giving us real-time insights and streamlining the process even further.

Cons

Honestly, we don’t have anything we dislike about Dovetail. If we had to complain about something, it’s that we wish we had discovered it sooner! It’s made such a positive impact on our workflow that imagining how we managed without it feels like a distant memory.

Switched from

Our team moved from ProductBoard to Dovetail due to its simplicity and the wealth of features it offers. It has streamlined our process and given us better tools to prioritize and act on user insights effectively.

### "Beautiful way to conduct customer research"

October 15, 2024

Pros

Dovetail is EXCEPTIONAL at customer research. It's built specifically for this use case and it feels like they've thought about every single detail about it. I love that you can drop a transcript or a video interview and get it transcribed in seconds, ready to be analyzed. The highlights and tags methodology is scalable and you can customize it to whatever research process or nomenclature you use. Dovetail's interface is beautiful, making it an absolute joy to use day in and day out.

### "Great system for managing a research library for UX"

November 13, 2019

5.0

I think this is the best tool on the market for UX research repositories. Does it have every function you might need? No. However, no tool does and unlike others, the Dovetail team is actively engaged with their network to make improvements that we request. What more could you want!

Pros

I love this system, they have done a great job at understanding how UX researchers work and aligning the software to these needs. The tool does a great job at storing data, storing project details, standardising research across a team (through templates). Unlike other research libraries, this tool allows you to analyse the data and create reports from the tool (Dashboards). Not everyone in my team loves the way you analyse in the tool, however, I think its great that we can work end to end in a single tool. This helps keep all the data safely stored in one location.

Cons

My constraints in the system also exist in the product backlog. For example, I would love for transcription to happen in the tool to further limit where the data is stored. I would like graphs to be able to be embedded into dashboards, I would like more options within the graphs (cross-tabling of attributes like you can in Nvivo). I would like the tool to do a better job at supporting 'cross pollination' of projects. Aka if I find a valuable insight in another project I have to copy and paste it into my new project, artificially inflating the data. I don't love that. The tool doesn't do an awesome job with quantitative data, I'd keep my stats elsewhere :)

### "Now to effectively use your qualitative research "

June 12, 2019

4.0

As our business space grows we are using Dovetail to capture data that is then used to validate ideas about new products or features as well as use our archive to identify insights and painpoints we were not aware of prior.

Pros

The ability to tag data and then synthesise that data with quick and easy functionality is really effective in comparing notes across multiple qualitative research documents.

Cons

The UX around building insights takes a little bit of discovery. Adding tags or highlights into an insight has resulted in me adding, deleting, trying again... a few times.

Pros

Ive been using Dovetail for user research for 3 years now, it is definitely one of the top SaaS companies for User research. The new AI features are not perfect but incredibly useful. the ability to transcribe right in the product and have a summary created within minutes is amazing. I absolutely love the short clips that are created from all the tags, a perfect small video to present to product teams about a specific feature easily created for you.

My team and I started using Dovetail early on and it's provided value from day one and has only improved. Dovetail gives my team a centralised location to store and reference our user research, ensuring data is never lost or fragmented. It has also helped to align our day-to-day product work and to onboard new team members with existing projects. The recent introduction of AI tools such as Summaries has greatly improved the rate of communication to PMs and key stakeholders ahead of final results and more formal planning.

### "Great tool for processing user interviews"

October 14, 2024

4.0

Dovetail helps us keep all recordings and insights from interviews in one place. The major benefit is the ability to use tags to classify insights and quotes from customers, making knowledge easily accessible when needed. We often take screenshots from Dovetail and paste them into our work boards to help set the context for meetings or to advocate for a user pain point we believe should be addressed.

Pros

My team and I have been using Dovetail for three years now, and it’s our go-to platform for processing user interviews. It's incredibly easy to upload a recording and start tagging insights. The UI is simple and beautiful, and we love it!

Cons

The navigation within the app can sometimes be confusing, and we've struggled to expand its use cases. While we use it extensively for processing user interviews, other types of feedback are kept separate, which creates some friction that we haven't been able to resolve yet.

I couldn't always present the results the way I wanted to. I liked the storytelling feature but couldn't always share it easily, or integrate it with Slides/Powerpoint.

### "Great tool for getting the entire business involved"

August 5, 2019

5.0

Overall very happy that I can use the same tool for disseminating insights around the entire business as well as analyse our research! Great customer service, they've been quick to help us with anything and their roadmap looks great and they also seem to be pretty quick at turning around new features!

Pros

\- Very easy to get the hang of by both researchers and non-researchers - Very pleasant to use: Pure Joy UI makes you wanna go in the tool all the time (yeah, I know, UI matters!) - Flexible spaces - you can use it to create templates and this way to bring consistency and also expand good practice research to entire company, outside of the research team - It's good at engaging non-researchers via a "Discover" board where you can see all the latest insights - Flexible notes allowing unlimited videos, images, the data doesn't have to be just plain text

Cons

\- Still some work being done on automations, and using global tags instead of just project-specific tags, but they have a lot of cool stuff on the roadmap - A little concerned about the inability to back-up / export all data at once (only in parts), but it's also on their roadmap and their customer service have also offered to do it as a one-off for us - Perhaps the ability to quantitatively measure behaviours from user testing (e.g. X users successfully completed the tasks) would be a great addition

### "Capturing insights without all the messy paperwork"

October 22, 2018

5.0

Pros

I've been involved in software research projects for nearly 10 years. This process is often incredibly messy, tedious and highly intensive (in terms of labor). You're often living in sticky note hell and it's even more challenging to do this as a remote team. The one thing Dovetail does an incredible job at is making it easy to aggregate qualitative research, identify trends and produce reports quickly without all that manual work. Works greatly for distributed teams and helps you scale your research efforts across your org. Key features that I can't live without: \* Notes ability - adding all your research and interviews \* Tagging - Ability to annotate your notes with keywords your team has aligned on. \* Insights - ability to summarize your learnings for stakeholders. What's great is that it's very easy for a stakeholder to know exactly how you concluded a set of insights with the ability to see customer and research quotes for each tag or insight.

Cons

Can be a bit hard to get started - getting your head around notes/tags and insights (they all look the same at first!)

### "Ok, but could be so much more"

October 10, 2023

4.0

Frustrating. This tool could be great, but the missing UX touches and performance let it down.

Pros

Dovetail really helps get a handle on the mass of material that comes out of interviews

Cons

For a tool that's supposed to be for UX researchers, the UX isn't great. There are plenty of little things that could be easily resolved, like if you come out of a video transcript to manage tags, when you go back to the video, you are dumped at the beginning, rather than the last point you were editing.Performance also sucks. There's a 5 second delay when you do anything. Make an edit to the transcript - 5 seconds. Add a tag - 5 seconds. It's really slowing me down and is massively frustrating.I've tried re-booting the laptop and working with ONLY Dovetail loaded, nothing else. Nothing seems to improve it. I have a decent laptop and no other tools suffer from this.On top of that, they offer a few AI tools, but their all talk and no trousers. The AI summary does a poor job on transcripts and stops if the transcript is too long. You certainly couldn't use the summary in a report. Definitely does not live up to the hype.
