### "Fastracking the Web Development process"

August 20, 2025

5.0

I ran a web hosting company for over 10 years and have created hundreds of websites using Joomla's framework.

Pros

Joomla allows the web development process to be jumpstarted by using recycleable framework that can be customized to suit your needs.

Cons

Having to debug module, plugins, and add-ons for issues after updating Joomla to a new version. Checking over all the web applications resources for vulnerabilities.

Alternatives considered

### "Getting long in the tooth"

November 27, 2024

3.0

I've used Joomla for several projects over multiple years. At this point, I use it out of familiarity rather than preference. It's too complex to be suited to building a small business website. Perhaps it's a best fit for a publication of some sort. Today, there are so many quicker and simpler ways to build most website needs, I feel like it might be a bit of a dinosaur.

Pros

PHP based. Large community of users. Reputation for security.

Cons

Wild west of plug-in vendors. Lack of built-in page creation model. Painful transition from 3.x

### "Seems to have stoped in time"

February 25, 2024

4.0

Pros

Up to 12 years ago I used Joomla a lot for many websites and back then it was very intuitive, easy to use and fairly complete, compared to what competitors offered

Cons

Nowadays this seems to have droped a lot in quality, functionality, simplicity, easy of use, etc. Other platforms have grown a lot better like WordPress, Prestashop among others, and Joomla simply seem to have lots the magic that once had

### "Joomla a tool for intermediate website management"

December 16, 2021

4.0

Joomla has helped us to rapidly create plain websites, informative websites in a real quick way. Joomla allows us to have blogs that are shareable and easy to use across collaborators This option offers flexibility and is user-friendly for those that are not experts in coding.

Pros

Joomla is a cool tool for beginners but also for intermediate users. What I liked more was. - The correct division of the elements available for manipulation (components, modules, templates) - The UI is good and allows you a friendly usability

Cons

Joomla could consider being more flexible when an upgrade is required. I understand there are some dependencies on the versions of external software like PHP or MySQL, but the support sometimes is not clear and has generated some users to leave Joomla and look for other opportunities.

### "A Tough CMS that Could Be Better"

March 2, 2021

3.0

Joomla is yet another CMS for me though, even if it was more or less an exploration to find a better application within its category. Overall, it's a tough one and I will need a passionate mindset to dive deeper into this software.

Pros

Joomla is becoming very useful for e-commerce solutions, considering the powerful extensions that are being built for it these days. And of course, as it is an open-source application it makes it easy to customize and extend to one's need. Not to forget it's also free too.

Cons

Joomla didn't have much usability support compared to major players like WordPress and Drupal. Considering the fact that there were fewer extensions available to improve functionalities and most available ones were paid. So it wasn't a friendly application to explore then.

Reason for choosing Joomla

Adobe wasn't extensible, so I had to look out for something that could fit my need. Secondly, Adobe Dreamweaver was proprietary, so I needed to stay clear for that moment.

I didn't really switch in the true sense, I was just exploring to see if I could get something better than what I got with both apps, as mentioned.

### "A Content Management System for building websites"

December 29, 2019

5.0

I used Joomla to build my website. It was relatively easy to get started with. Joomla works with extensions and templates which allows them to be easily customisable. Joomla saved me the cost of having to outsource my website design to a website developer.

Pros

Joomla is a Content Management System (CMS) that can be used to build websites. The things I like about Joomla are: 1. Ability to build a website with no technical knowledge required: The first time I worked on Joomla, I didn't know how to write the programming languages on which Joomla was built, but I was still able to build a website with it using available Joomla templates and extensions. 2. Easy learning curve: I learnt everything I needed to get started with Joomla, and also built my first Joomla website in one day. There are available YouTube tutorials, and plog posts on the internet that can help one to get going with Joomla. 3. Free domain name and hosting: Joomla provides users the option of using Joomla customised domain names for their websites, and also provides them with free hosting. I leveraged Joomla's free domain name and free hosting to build my first Joomla website. 4. Easy to customise: Joomla is very easy to customise. Joomla works with templates and extensions. The templates helps someone to decide how his/her Joomla website will look like, while the extension helps someone to add some functionalities to his/her website. 5. Security: Joomla constantly updates their CMS to provide security patches, and also to keep it from the attack of viruses. This increases the level of confidence with Joomla.

Cons

Joomla is an awesome CMS, but that is not without its cons. The cons of Joomla are: 1. Despite the fact that Joomla is easy to learn, it's learning curve is more complex than that of other CMSs like WordPress, Wix, and Weebly. 2. Poor layout: For me, the outlook of a website designed with Joomla seems to be less elegant than that designed with other CMSs like WordPress and Wix. These are the two cons I can point out with Joomla.

### "Flexible and SEO friendly Content Management System"

February 15, 2021

I have been working with Joomla CMS for many years and it is one of the strongest and oldest free and open source CMS in the world and it is one of the best in terms of security, technology and simplicity and I’ve use Joomla for some website cases that have special features.

Pros

It's open source and free! It supported by volunteer community for many years and it's free forever.

Cons

Joomla template design could be more beautiful and with more features. In appearance, it has fewer molds than other competitors and should invest more in the appearance and design of the UI.

### "Joomla has a great wide range of capabilities and features"

January 27, 2025

5.0

Once you become more familiar with the user interface it became easier to create the functions needed for my website.

Pros

Joomla is robust in it’s flexibility for a wide range of uses for developing even complex websites. If you are looking for a wide range of capabilities this is great software choice.

Cons

Using Joomla requires having a stronger background in knowing how to modify the site’s structure and development so there is a little more of a learning curve.

Cons

### "Joomla, a sunsetting open source has-been"

August 4, 2021

2.0

Joomla was OK when we entered the CMS space 12 years ago. Now it is just horrid, overall experience is dated and pathetic. A massively frustrating and mostly dissapointing experience with the community support pages. As of May of 2021, we've abandoned the platform, as it appears to be dying a slow and painful death.

Pros

Powerful backend tools and MySQL management, solid from the admin of the CMS itself. Decent conternt manmagement tools.

Cons

Terrible, outdated UI. Templating system is intuitive - the module based architecture is almost unmanageable and SOOOO time consuming to make even the most simple template changes. Wooly and unpredictable stable of 3rd party extension/components. There are 1000s of really poor offerings, many abandoned by the original devs, but still listed. Only a handful of very solid offerings to extend the core Joomla functionality. No full number release version anywhere on the horizon. The 4.0 beta has been out since February 2021. It took them years to arrive at the beta. Search the Joomla.org website for "roadmap" and first relevant page comes up from 20 October 2005. The Board of Directors seems ever-shifting, unfocused and not unified.

Reason for choosing Joomla

Balance between ease of use and powerful feature set.

### "Don't manage yourself unless you're experienced"

March 1, 2024

3.0

Joomla was quite disappointing to us, however, this is likely due to our lack of knowledge surrounding the product. Supporting documentation was limited and didn't help us on a lot of occasions. If you plan to use Joomla, I would highly suggest utilising a third party with experience to manage it for you, as it is very easy to overwhelm yourself and get lost in the software.

Pros

Joomla's pricing is fairly low, which makes it affordable.

Cons

It is VERY difficult to use and manage. A lot of the plugins (such as CAPTCHA for contact forms) are difficult to implement and update. It requires a lot of work to manage and trying to navigate the admin tools can be difficult.

### "Joomla is a great cms alternative to Wordpress "

February 13, 2019

5.0

I’ve used it for years with great results for myself and clients. I feel that my joomla sites have been more easy to update and more stable than the Wordpress ones as the years have went by. I’d much more rather troubleshoot a joomla error than a Wordpress one :) any day

Pros

I love Joomlas structure both from a content editors perspective and a coders perspective. Joomla is setup out of the box to handle and organize large amounts of content and is seo friendly. It’s templating system is easy to work with and makes it so much easier for designers and users. It’s admin is customizable and is logical. I’ve tried to love Wordpress but find myself always going back to joomla. In so many ways it’s core features and overall structure is just more logical to me and cleaner. Many times there isn’t a need for plugins cause the core will do most things which helps later on with site migrations and upgrades. With either Wordpress or joomla of one finds themselves needing super advanced feature sets such as for e-commerce or other things then I’d recommend looking into a customized saas service since they will be a lot more stable and better in the long term for maintenance and security. But for content sites and most business applications I love joomla over most other cms choices. The latest versions of joomla have also added nice core features making it extensible in a myriad of ways. As a non coder by trade I was able to learn joomla well and customize things myself since they are laid out more logically,

Cons

I think akeeba backup should partner with joomla and make akeeba a core feature of the cms :) but it’s still easy to install myself and run backups :) so no problem.

### "CMS that is fully customizable"

July 10, 2018

5.0

Joomla! CMS is one of the first out there, and it keeps improving. Support is easy to find via their active Open source community. The setup requires a little reading up, but once you get past this initial hurdle, everything else is easy to use, intuitive, and super flexible to suit everyone's need. Joomla! is also a good choice in teaching young IT and Web enthusiasts since it is open source and fully extensible and customizable. It will run on older hardware, and minimum requirement will not be a problem.

Pros

Joomla! has been around for decades, and the reason for such popularity and continued use is that it is easy-to-use and manage, it is open source and has a huge and active community that maintains it. The community provides extensive documentation, FAQs, and support for almost any question or issue you may encounter. Joomla! can be set up locally and easy to deploy to the Internet publicly. The security features have significantly improved through the years. This CMS comes with an intuitive dashboard. And there are many third-party integrations available for setup. Since this is open source, the elements are customizable to suit your needs.

Cons

Setting up may require an initial (steep) learning curve. May be not as easy to set up as Wix or Weebly. Hence may require the admin to be more-or-less tech savvy (and not just a beginner).

### "Join the Community and Discover Joomla's Power"

April 10, 2023

4.0

It is a free CMS which can be used to build your website and make it look good and attractive. It is completely free to use so worth a try.

Pros

1\. Joomla is designed to be search engine optimization (SEO) friendly and includes features such as meta tags, sitemaps, and URL rewriting.2. It has a large and active community of users and developers who contribute to the software by creating templates, extensions, and plugins.3. It is highly scalable and can be used to create websites and applications of any size, from small blogs to large e-commerce sites.4. Joomla can be easily integrated with other applications and services, such as social media platforms, payment gateways, and CRM systems.5. It provides users with a comprehensive support system that includes forums, documentation, and community-based support.

Cons

It is slower sometimes and might require some training to use it. However, many video tutorials are available in YouTube.

### "Powerful but hard to use CMS"

February 18, 2019

3.0

We have used joomla as the CMS for our website for over a decade (now we've migrated to Wordpress) and it proved stable, reliable and adaptable, but we had the advantage of being a software company where designers and developers were always readily available to beat Joomla into submission. I think that nowadays Wordpress is a better overall solution, but do take Joomla intou account. Its the old reliable CMS that can certainly get the job done, but I would only reccomend it for tech savvy users or developers.

Pros

The best about joomla is that it is very powerful and adaptable. I has a big community, thousands of sites made with it have created an enourmous community of developers and designers who have experience with it. That also means that is has a huge assortment of plugins, extensions, themes and whatnot. Its very likely that whatever problem you have someone had the same problem before, so solutions will be available in the form of plugins (sometimes paid ones), or forum posts. If you need to do something very specific that requires coding, well then joomla is simple php and js, meaning any developer can quickly fins his way around joomla.

Cons

The main con about joomla is that it is a bit old and unintiutive. If you have never dealt with a CMS then you might need to read some documentation to find your way around a joomla site. Even if you have used other CMSs, joomla has it's very own way of doing things, meaning that tutorials and getting started guides are a must. Plugins rarely work straight of of the box (or zip), they usually requiere a bit of coding to get them exactly like you want them, but that can be said about pretty much any CMS.

### "Create You Own Responsive Website"

August 14, 2021

5.0

I have used Joomla since it's 1.5 version (it's just about to enter v.4 at the time of writing) so there must be something good about it!! I've used it for a web based book rental service (modifying an online store component), for a school's and cafe's general website (the ability to create custom made forms, with back-end functions is a huge plus. Recently I have used it to set up a fully responsive online store where the functuality we needed was not available on out-of-the-box platforms.

Pros

Some of things I like about Joomla are, it gives you a lot of freedom to create your own website, with the features and styling you want, or need! Also, there are loads of extensions on the JED (Joomla Extension Directory) so if you want your website to preform a certain function...somebody has probably already built an extension for that. Many of these aforementioned extensions, are either free or low cost. There is also the satisfaction of building your own unique website and knowing that it will be fully responsive accross all devices.

Cons

The learning curve is a little steep. While setting up Joomla is relatively easy, getting that polished look of professional sites can take some fiddling, delving into code and tweaking certain parameters etc..

### "Not the best, not the worst"

September 7, 2021

3.0

After initial setup, we have had very few problems with this platform. The business directory works great for us.

Pros

I really enjoy Joomla and the business directory module we are using. This aspect alone has helped us grow our business, because a non-tech can make the basic updates on our sites.

Cons

Setting up the site took us hiring a professional. We thought we could handle on our own, but a professional is recommended.

Reason for choosing Joomla

We switched from WordPress to Joomla. Joomla does have some upsides to it. WordPress is comparable, but WordPress does offer many more theme choices and plugins. Joomla upside is it requires WAY LESS updating to keep it running.

### "Joomla makes web design and content management a breeze"

August 19, 2023

5.0

Joomla makes it easy to build professional and responsive websites. It offers many features, templates, and extensions, making work easier. Since many people use it, you can always get help from third party users. You can also get videos describing how to solve any challenges you may encounter.

Pros

I like Joomla because it provides many templates and extensions to create the website our clients want. You can choose the extensions you need whether you want a simple site or a complex online store that would otherwise take time to build. It has many users so I do not have to contact the support when I need help because there are many tutorials and online forums discussing about it.

Cons

Using too many extensions affect the loading speed of the website. I only use the necessary extensions to avoid this problem. I found the interface overwhelming before I got the hang of it. The learning curve is longer than that of competitor such as WordPress.

### "Joomla review"

April 10, 2023

4.0

Pros

Joomla is an excellent open source content management system that is perfect for creating websites, blogs, and online stores. It is simple to use, has a vast selection of features, and is highly customizable, making it very flexible. You can use it to build any sort of website, from a small personal blog to a large corporate website. It is also very extensible, offering hundreds of third-party extensions that can be used to add further features.

Cons

Joomla has some disadvantages, such as difficulty in modification and extension, especially for those with limited knowledge in coding. It can also be slow and resource-intensive, particularly on shared hosting plans. Additionally, there is an absence of modern visual design elements, as well as incompatibility with more recent technologies like HTML5 and CSS3.

### "Joomla Review"

At the beginning, Joomla was good for the website development side of my business. However, I had issues at times, especially the template limitations.

Pros

It allowed me in the beginning of my business to have customers customize their templates and it did not take long time to implement their websites.

Cons

We had a lot of problems using templates for Joomla, and there were times when the CMS end-user interface would stop working. It was hard to fix, and we would have to restore backups in many situations.

### "The Potential to Grow"

March 9, 2018

5.0

I build sites for myself and clients using this platform.

Pros

Very powerful tools to restrict and grant access to users and admins built-in. I find it more secure then Wordpress, which is probably due to Wordpress' popularity, however, there are a lot of security features built-in. Very active community and the plugins are vetted regularly that are posted on their website. Joomla websites are very versatile in what they can be used for and can grow as you need them. They keep a regular update schedule and keep the community updated .

Cons

It can be a little confusing whether the content is coming from an article, component or a module. They don't handle canonical links very well and links are all menu based (however that can be a positive because it's easy to dictate what you'd like for a URL). Media Manager is a bit cumbersome and hopefully, version 4 will address a lot of the issues (such as replacing images).

### "An Open Source Classic- but not for everyone"

January 1, 2021

5.0

In my opinion, Joomla! is still a tool for geeks, who prefer functionality over aesthetics. If you want to exercise full control over your website, from the hosting to the design, this is one of the best choices on the market. Your site can easily be adapted and expanded thanks to a myriad of plugins or extensions. I personally prefer giving up control to have less hassle with the developing part, and prefer a smoother look.

Pros

I started using Joomla! 3.1 when I did a course on Open Source Systems whilst unemployed. We were able to choose between Wordpress and Joomla!- and I chose Joomla! because I was already using Blogger, and knew that WP was somewhat similar. I liked the fact that the backend was fairly easy to use for the actual writing part- optimal for beginners. This was similar to what I was used at writing blogposts. I liked that there are many plugins available that integrate smoothly- which tends to be a big problem in Wordpress (many bugs).

Cons

For a fair beginner, setting up a server was rather challenging. Also, I am a bit of a design geek- and the "look" of the platform (something I know doesn't deter most programmers) hurt my taste back then. I noticed that this has since improved with version 4, and I am aware that I am being superficial here, and probably not part of the target group- who have different priorities, like usability, extendability, speed etc.

### "Joomla - One of the best Content Management Systems!"

May 5, 2022

5.0

I've built several sites with Joomla and it's able to provide the full functionality that my clients expect ,thanks to various templates, extensions and plugins that can be integrated.

Pros

Free and open source is certainly an advantage. But on the technical side, its gives you better control over your website. I also like that it supports a wide range of databases, Multi-Lingual Support and very good security.

Cons

Compared to similar products on the market, it's a bit more complex with respect to the learning curve and requires patience and proper research to ease into it.

Reason for choosing Joomla

It's easier and quicker to build sites
