LibreOffice fits the bill for a school on a tight budget. Yes, there are features that staff complain about not having, but it serves the purposes of our administration when we need newer textbooks or Office licenses, and we can't afford to pay for it. It also isn't great, but it is good enough to use on a daily basis.

Pros

Document management software, free software to do everything we need to do with our records from students records to curriculum plans. Parents are able to submit, teachers can open with no format problem. Setup on 30+ computers is free. None of the budget has to be approved in order to make updates. We use a spreadsheet program to do our attendance and it works well for us. No crashes for our 50-page policy-manual using a Word processor.

Cons

Teachers say that the interface is outdated, compared to what they use at home. Searching for specific functions is more time consuming, it took 20 minutes yesterday to find mail merge. Tech support is nothing more than forum searching. There are some PowerPoints that have been created by district office that will not curve in the correct order.

Pros

LibreOffice would meet the requirements of writing the documents and organizing the files of Guide Marketing as well as will not require another recurrent line of expenses which I would have to explain. It will work without fuss on simple professional writing and basic spreadsheet work.

Pros

The ability to have a complete suite of fully functional document and spreadsheet that I can open any file type that a client sends to me any time at no cost is something I do more and more appreciate and the longer I operate my lean agency.

Cons

The interface slows me down as it allows navigation in outdated ways. It takes more menu hunting than it ever should to find certain features, which I need to accomplish quite often.

Overall, my experience with LibreOffice has been very positive. It is stable, powerful, and more than sufficient for the majority of academic research tasks, from drafting manuscripts to preparing figures and tables for publication. Once properly set up, it integrates smoothly into a daily research workflow. While it may require occasional workarounds for advanced formatting or collaboration-heavy projects, its strengths, openness, and cost-free availability far outweigh these limitations. I consider LibreOffice a dependable and ethical productivity suite for researchers, especially those committed to open standards and reproducible research.

Pros

As a postdoctoral researcher, I value tools that are reliable, transparent, and flexible, and LibreOffice fits well into that workflow. I mainly use it for writing research papers, reports, grant drafts, and for light data handling in spreadsheets. Writer is particularly strong for long-form academic documents, as it handles styles, references, footnotes, and large files very well, which is essential when working on journal articles or collaborative reports. I also appreciate that LibreOffice is open source and free, which aligns well with the ideals of open science and makes it easy to recommend to students and collaborators regardless of their institution’s budget. Its compatibility with common document formats (especially .docx, .csv, and .xlsx) allows smooth collaboration with colleagues who use proprietary software.

Cons

The main downside is that compatibility with Microsoft Office is not always perfect, especially for very complex documents with advanced formatting, tracked changes, or heavily styled tables. Occasionally, layout issues appear when exchanging files back and forth multiple times. The user interface, while functional, can also feel less polished or less intuitive than some commercial alternatives, particularly for new users. Some advanced features exist but are not always easy to discover, which can slow down workflows unless you already know where to look or customize the interface.

LibreOffice is the best alternative for those switching from Windows to a Linux system or for those who no longer want to pay the ransom fees that Microsoft imposes for Office 365. I couldn't be happier.

Pros

LibreOffice is a fully featured office suite that competes well with similar Microsoft and Google products. But, LibreOffice is free, making is the best value available. It is as easy to set up and learn as any other software without all of the security doubt that comes with browser based software. Navigation of the Office suite works just as expected due to it being available on every platform for the same cost...$0!

Cons

LibreOffice is not laden with AI tools, which could be a pro, but it also doesn't offer much in the case of writing assistance. Customer support for LibreOffice is only handled by the open community. File organization is strange in the Linux version, but that is to be expected.

Very satisfied with this alternative to OFFICE, which handles about 90% of everything I need for productivity. I am in the TEXT document every single day multiple times, and use the Sheets function every morning. I've used it for several years and am very satisfied with this software.

Pros

I use LibreOffice every day to write and save documents and sheets. It is a great value for the free plan, easy to use due to familiarity and has all the features I need for my business.

Cons

The constant upgrades can gum up the system, and the formating doesn't always translate into other files.

It is my best choice since I started working on the Linux Ubuntu Laptop operating system and did not have interest in Microsoft Office or other similar projects.

Pros

It is a great tool for document editing, and a very light memory footprint, which is a high value all for free, with ease of use and simplicity comparable to proprietary software like Microsoft Office, and it provides may customization functions and navigation options that can help writing and creating in many packages.

Cons

Sometimes I find it not the best to have a clear and simple user interface, and the work using the writer is overwhelming.

It's a great piece of software if you want something that works offline and isn't trying to shove AI into your process.

Pros

It's free and works offline. I often need something that can make quick edits, and the loading time of the programme is very good.

Cons

I'm not sure that it has the best interface and can be frustrating to use when you are more familiar with another type of software.

Overall, I've continued to use it because the benefits way outweigh the costs. I would highly recommend it to anyone who doesn't have the budget to pay for software for documents, sheets and presentations.

Pros

I love that I can access are complete office for free and it can export into various formats that are usable in other popular programs. I've never had a problem with creating any documents or with anyone being able to read them upon my sending them. I've been using LibreOffice for years and have yet to have to pay for a word proccessing software.

Cons

The cons I would say are most noticeable in the powerpoint version of the software. Often times the formatting doesn't exactly transfer over, or if I open a powerpoint file in libreoffice sometimes things go wonky and features are lost.

Quite a good impression, needs more effort to match up with ms office compatibility. Certain common features or functionality in MS office are not available.

Pros

Catching up as an alternate app to Microsoft office. It can open up ms office file without much problem.

Cons

Found a few glitches on opening slide in .odp file: 1) if larger fonts are used, they seem to get condensed with character overlapping one another, totally unreadable. 2) unable to have section title for a group of slides like MS PowerPoint. Section can be expanded and collapse, and facilitate navigation during slide show. Am I missing any LibreOffice similar features?

Mac user sent in .odp file and we face difficulty to use it with ms ofc.
