Small Business Owner Mental Health Care Used the software for: Less than 6 months ### "Not suitable for solo small business owners + inflexible refund policy" January 29, 2026 1.0 My overall experience was that Semrush is a powerful but highly complex platform that is not well-suited for solo small business owners without dedicated SEO experience or support. I realized within two days of resubscribing that I did not have the time or technical background needed to use the tool effectively, and I contacted support immediately after recognizing this. While customer support was responsive, the refund process was extremely rigid. Despite the very short timeframe and the fact that I had not meaningfully used the product, my refund request was denied and the case was closed as final. This left me feeling that there was little flexibility or consideration for small business owners who quickly determine the platform is not a good fit. This may be an excellent tool for SEO professionals or agencies, but based on my experience, it requires more expertise and time than many solo business owners realistically have. Pros Semrush is clearly a very powerful and comprehensive SEO platform. It offers an impressive range of tools and data, and I can see how it would be extremely valuable for experienced SEO professionals or teams who use it daily. The depth of features and analytics suggests it’s well-built for advanced use cases. Cons I resubscribed to Semrush after having used it briefly in the past when I had an assistant helping me. This time, I intended to use it myself as a solo small business owner. Within two days of resubscribing, it became very clear that I did not have the time, technical background, or bandwidth to use the platform effectively. I contacted customer support almost immediately, explained that I had not used the tool, and asked for a refund. I was polite, transparent, and acknowledged that this was technically a resubscription—even though my previous use had been with help and this was my first attempt to use it independently. Despite the request being made within two days, my refund was denied because the subscription was month-to-month rather than annual. The case was escalated internally and then closed as “final,” with no reconsideration possible. While I understand companies have policies, this experience felt particularly rigid given: •The extremely short timeframe (2 days) •The lack of actual product use •The reality that Semrush is heavily marketed to small business owners, despite having a very steep learning curve This platform may work well for experienced SEO professionals or teams, but in my experience it is not beginner-friendly and not forgiving to solo business owners who quickly realize it’s not the right fit. I would strongly encourage other small business owners to fully understand the refund limitations before subscribing and to be realistic about whether they truly have the time and expertise required to use this tool effectively. It was not bad. But now their support is terrible. No rectification of a clear fault. Replying with there is no error when there is a clear error. Cons We've noticed more and more discrepancies and missing data that are HUGE in comparison to every other tool. or they are flatout just missing. eg. Position Tracking tool - our most importantly used tool. volume for a keyword in Google Keyword Planner set to same location is showing a volume of 590 and in semrush its a flat 0. Most of position tracking over different client accounts are showing 0 volume for their most primary keywords and in turn making our traffic metrics look like garbage in position tracking, when infact they're booming. I raised this issue with their support just after my renewal, they stretched the responses out for 2 weeks after multiple follow up attempts and then wont refund me my 5k renewal because it's now outside the strict 7 day refund period. However the issue was raised literally two days after the renewal where i mentioned im giving them the opportunity to resolve and update all my campaigns first before i ask for a refund. I did the right thing - they want to scam me. Semrush in my eyes now is just a scam. Stay away. There are much better tools out there and weve moved off and will never look back and have only but the worst to say about semrush like most the other reviews on here. Review Source VR Verified Reviewer Owner Real Estate Used the software for: 2+ years ### "Beware of SEMrush’s Cancellation & Refund Process" January 7, 2026 1.0 Pros The platform itself may be useful, but their cancellation policy, lack of transparency around automated communications, and refusal to refund despite timely cancellation attempts are major red flags. I strongly recommend reading the fine print and being very cautious before subscribing. Cons I had a very frustrating experience trying to cancel my SEMrush subscription. I attempted to cancel before the renewal charge, yet I was still billed and then denied a refund. What made this worse was the cancellation process itself. Their system repeatedly sent the same automated email over and over, never progressing to the next step. At no point does SEMrush clearly disclose that these email responses are AI-generated, which is misleading and wastes a lot of time. The process only moved forward after I explicitly asked to speak with a human, something that is not clearly indicated anywhere in the cancellation flow. Even after following the steps and attempting to cancel in good faith before being charged, SEMrush refused to issue a refund. Also they nickel and dime you about everything. Expansion Manager Computer Software Used the software for: Less than 6 months ### "A lot of service, too much for a beginner and horrible cancelation processing" June 3, 2025 2.0 Overall, like I said they would benefit greatly from at least having a BEGINNER view or some kind of onboarding survey that directly puts you into a beginner view with just the tools available to handle whatever the new subscriber came to handle. Then it can expand out from there. The peopel I dealt with in person were fine but the cancelation experience is against the law and a nightmare, honestly. Pros It was a decent tool to SEO optimize blog articles. There are a ton of things to do in the platform, but I feel it's so much built it can be difficult to navigate. You have to have a "degree in semrush" in order to actually fully utilize it. This is problematic when there are other tools like the ones by \[sensitive content hidden\] which are simpler. I feel there really needs to be a beginner UI and the various UI elements should be unlockable or in some way there should be a beginner version. Cons There's quite a few things. Their SEO optimization for articles is okay, but I find just prompting a free GPT instance to be about the same. Using paid GPT is considerably better. The article builder has an image suggestion tool that's absolutely bogus. It's generative AI image prompting bordering on 2019 quality and looks like it hasn't been iterated on since launch. Just unusable and even when you can create a halfway decent image it still looks like AI gen slop. Their cancelation policy is incredibly out-dated and violates FTC guidelines on a one-click cancellation. I've spoken to support about this and I get back a robotic response of "That's just what our policy is." They don't seem to get it's factually against the law. Here's the entire process: 1. You can't just go to your subscription and click cancel 2. You have submit a chat request 3. The chat then takes you to a form you have to fill out with your reason for canceling and VERIFY you want to cancel. 4. Then you are sent an eMail CONFIRMING your cancelation that you need to click on. 5. Further still I was told despite going through all these steps, "You didn't give clear intent of your desire to cancel." so I was billed for another month. I tried to clarify for the 4th time that it's not supposed to be this way and is in fact an FTC violation. No acknowledgement of that. Just robotic replies ignoring it. There is a lot of additional value add in the features and information it can generate for you as well. Pros Semrush is an absolute must for optimizing your site for SEO, the site audit feature gives you invaluable insight on your website in order to fix and optimize things for best performance. I also like how you can easily and quickly gather competitive analysis on any website. Cons I wish there was better insight on Advertising analysis of competitors, it only shows google search keywords mostly from what I have seen, I would like for it to show a more comprehensive footprint of digital advertising. They give you the run around and require you to jump through hoops to cancel their free trial and then deny even when you've done what you're supposed to do. Their policies are highly illegal. I'm sharing because I don't want others to have to deal with the same things I did. Pros I used it for a short time during my trial period. There are other websites out there that have similar features. Cons Semrush is absolutely horrendous when it comes to customer service. I am not the only one (look at Google reviews). I cancelled during their free trial period with plenty of time to spare and they still charged me hundreds of dollars. They are refusing to return the money and are using shady practices to give me the run around. It is highly illegal due to the FTC's one-click to cancel law. Do not give them business. It helps me to quickly assess competitors and potential clients, as well as for researching on-page topics. I also use the local SEO package, though am considering switching to more custom products elsewhere. Pros The amount of features it has that can help your business with now only SEO but also research for advertising. Cons The cost can be high and a lot of features cost extra monthly with quite high pricing. If they could charge a bit cheaper for extra then maybe more of them would be used by smaller agencies like my own.
