We luckily chose Canopy as our client portal system pre-pandemic. When the shut down occurred, we were ready to continue servicing our clients during this very termultuous time. AS we move forward from the pandemic, our clients have found they like having a single source to share documents virtually. We as a firm continue to develop our skills in Canopy and now use it for engagement letters, tax documents and any communications with our clients

Cons

Wish there could be better isolation of reminder emails or emails when a client performs as action.

Canopy has been a great solution for the start up of our new firm. Staff and clients like it and we find the cost to be a great value.

Pros

There are so many wonderful parts of Canopy, it is hard to choose just one! We really like that we can now access information from one "area" so to speak. Communications, billing, client data, file storage is not spread out over multiple software solutions or separate logins. Additionally, we feel we are getting great value for our money. This software really feels like it has been made for a small business but can grow with a company. If we didn't utilize Canopy, we would likely be paying for multiple software solutions to do what Canopy does in one. We absolutely love the client portal. All of our clients like it as well. Previously we used a different system, and files would expire, then we'd have to re-send documents if needed to clients. The Canopy portal is linked to the client's profile and file storage. You can just decide what to make visible to the client in one click. You are already storing the files so it is super easy to share current documents as well as past documents with Clients. Clients find it easy to use. Lastly, it is easy to learn. We found that after a bit of use, it is pretty intuitive. You can move in and out of the various parts with ease. You can start at looking at a client files, then move to their home page with contact info, etc., then look at their most recent bill, or last email sent to them. Very smooth and easy to navigate! As a new firm, Canopy is all we've used up to this point. However, our \[sensitive content hidden\] has worked for or been a parter at several firms including PWC, EY and a few smaller regional firms and says this is hands down easier to use and she loves it!

Cons

The reporting areas are our biggest frustration. The only way to create reports outside of canopy is to export to a .csv file. This is very frustrating as (1) the presentation is terrible. It requires a ton of time editing to make it look good for presentation and (2) the data is manipulable. If I want to pull a report of hours worked for payroll, I take a screenshot of the totals before pulling a report. I have accidentally "lost" hours when editing the .csv report to go along with my payroll reporting. I only knew about it by taking a screenshot of a report and comparing the two. Being able to export or print to pdf or word would be a huge bonus.

Overall its a decent product - price is comparable to other similar systems that integrate better though. I do like the idea of only having one product but while they are rolling out their features that I currently have other systems doing, it would be nice to have it all work together then the option to switch to Canopy's stuff only once its all updated. Customer Service has been hit or miss - sometimes very helpful and sometimes more frustrating. There's definitely a learning curve, but I feel that happens with any software.

Pros

The interface is overall clean. Clients have been able to easily navigate on their end. Time tracking and reports are easy. The file sharing with clients is easy and secure.

Cons

It doesn't integrate with much and there is a lot of set up to get tasks and workflows going. I absolutely hate the layout of the engagements for clients - its clunky to piece together and doesn't look good from the client side. They are slow to roll out new features but I am excited about some that have just come out or are about to.

Pros

Canopy is a comprehensive program that takes the place of 6 programs we used to use. The learning curve for canopy is quite easy. Our clients like it because they can more readily communicate with the tax preparers, unload documents, review the tax return before it is ready to be signed, pay the invoice for the prep and sign the document all in one place. This system we estimate will save us about 6k per month.

Preparing everything in advance to upload into canopy. It is very tedious organizing almost four thousand files and determining who is active and not active

Overall, we have been very impressed by canopy and it has helped us run more efficiently and smoothly as a firm. We are impressed by the continued improvements and features that have rolled out over the years and we look forward to watching how the program evolves.

Pros

I can access canopy anywhere and create customized dashboards that help me manage our practice and make actionable decisions. The interface that clients and we experience is a breath of fresh air compared to a lot of dated accounting software out there. Canopy support has always been very helpful when we've experienced issues.

Cons

Aside from periodic outages or glitches in the system, my primary dislike is just waiting for new features that we hope to see or running into occasional things that we would like to report on that we might not be able to report on easily in the insights feature.

Overall, my staff really enjoys the software and the ease of use once the implementation was done. Change is always hard, but it's nice to be able to look back and say that it was worth it.

Pros

We shopped for a long time for a program that was capable of replacing multiple other applications in our tech stack....and didn't find anything that we liked more than Canopy. We now have our client portals, communications, billing, task management and more in one platform that is easily accessible online or from the mobile app.

Cons

Some of the setup was challenging and takes some time. I wish that there were better integrations directly with Thomson Reuters to move tax returns easily into the system.

Don't know how we survived without it! We are very happy with the product and delighted to have such dedicated support.

Pros

We LOVE that Canopy brings all the information and documentation needed to one place. This save a great deal of time. Managing work flow has never been easier with Canopy's intuitive tools.

Cons

Honestly, they continue to make improvements based on user feedback. Our dislikes keep getting fixed! I would really like to have a working calendar tie into the mix. So we could see and or reschedule client appointments without having to use a stand alone calendar.

Stellar is the way I would describe my experience with Canopy. Despite the challenges, the benefits far exceed everything else. Instead of using five different systems to communicate with clients, Canopy has placed them all in one place. I believe our clients with enjoy Canopy as well.

Pros

I like the ease of communicating with clients and having a one-stop shop for interactions with our clients. The ability to invoice and receive payments of all kinds in one system is helpful. Sharing files and receiving signatures has been beneficial for our firm.

Cons

The ease of communicating with spouses has been a learning curve. In addition, we have had challenges with preferred names as we are a personable firm.

### "Customer Service is Terribly - This Company is too new to meet deadlines"

Purchased a license in order to use their Tax Prep software (NOT the tax management software - ability to track clients and manage the funnel of taxes). Was told everything would be ready in time, and I ensured they knew I was only buying now because the Tax Prep software was going to finally be ready. (They told me 4 different dates for when this would be ready as I've been working with their sales for 2 years, waiting for them to get things together). Jumped in and decided to make them our company for our tax prep business, and everything went wrong. Salesperson we worked with had quit, implementation team was slow, and then I got off the phone with a support person who casually mentioned that the tax software was tossed out for this year. We had no clue, completely SOL as we have 4 weeks until tax season started and had to rush to find another company. All done without an apology, just "oh that's funny, I thought everyone knew that we couldn't get the software ready", even though we were assured that it would be - for a quick sale I imagine. Lots of back and forth with different support team members. We had been paying for two months and getting everything switched to their platform - which took an enormous amount of time and effort from our people, just to be told they won't have it ready for us and we will not receive a refund. I told the support manager before about this review being posted and was told I "might get a call back" for help.

Pros

The software is cloud based and therefore easy to access.

Cons

The company consistantly made promises that they were unable to uphold. Pushbacks on product releases that we desperately needed, and no refund for their mistakes. Not the company you want to go with when you need something dependable. They're a tax company which makes it even more absurd that they mess around with deadlines.

It replaces several separate tools, which keeps the team focused and organized. Once you get used to the system, it becomes a powerful daily tool for managing clients and projects. Banking transaction should include other countries apart from the USA

Canopy unite all client information, files, and tasks into one place, which makes daily work much easier. The interface is clean, navigation is easy, and the tools feel well-integrated. Task management and client communication features reduce a lot of stress, and the system keeps everything organized without much manual effort. Customer support is fast. Invoice are easy to make

Cons

Some features take time to learn, especially when switching from another system A few advanced tools could be more intuitive, and occasional delays or sync issues happen during heavy use. Pricing may feel high for smaller teams.

### "Thomson Reuters File cab vs Tax Canopy"

Within two weeks of starting my 30 day free trial, I had it set up (so I could evaluate the details and functionality) and decided to switch from Thomson Reuters File Cab. Another local CPA had also finished his vetting process so Tax Canopy already came highly recommended.

Pros

Free support - chat in or ph call. Templates for global folder creation. Once this is figured out, you can populate new client files with all the needed folders in less than 30 seconds. Using "Tags" to identify clients to send email blasts inside Canopy - brilliant! Unlimited file storage. Thomson Reuters charges me which is odd in this day and age with super affordable data storage. Annotations to files (i.e. PDFs) without paying for an ADobe license. Client portals. I've used other portal software, including the Thompson Reuters VO portal, but Canopy has this down to simple science. The Desktop Assistant allows you to edit live Word and Excel files.

Cons

File migration from File Cab. I wrote a how-to process sheet for my firm so this is doable just time-consuming. Don't let that deter you as it is part of the pain to switch from one software to another. We also are ditching Thomson Reuters Practice CS (i.e. their time and billing software) for the one inside Canopy. The invoicing and reporting are much weaker in Canopy compared to Practice CS so this is a problem but wasn't a deal-breaker. Canopy has assured me that better reports are forthcoming and I trust Canopy.

Pros

Canopy gives us one clean, centralized place to manage client communication and tax workflow. The client portal is easy for clients to use, the organizers and document requests keep things structured, and the e-signature piece helps everything move along without a lot of back-and-forth. From our side, it keeps us organized and compliant, and from the client’s side, it feels simple and professional, which is important to us at BSU.

Cons

What we liked least about Canopy is that some of the workflow and automation can feel a bit rigid. For a firm like ours that serves a wide mix of clients, there are times we want more flexibility and customization in how requests, tasks, and follow-ups are handled. It’s a strong platform overall, but certain processes can feel more “one-size-fits-all” than ideal, especially when managing more complex or non-standard engagements.

Very positive. They make improvements all the time and I appreciate their workshops with influencers and other users so we can get perspectives from non-Canopy employees - it's very helpful.

Pros

We are early adopters of Canopy and like any new platform there will be kinks; and Canopy is great about listening to the users and making changes that are recommended so everyone can benefit. Customer service and follow up from our rep \[sensitive content hidden\] is excellent. She calls in the right people to assist in any call so we have a whole team that works with us through new modules, pricing and questions.

Cons

We don't use Invoicing in Canopy but our situation is very unique. We don't not like the invoicing, but the system we have works better for the needs of our clients. I will say that it's helpful that not using invoicing has not hurt our workflow

Pros

My favorite thing about Canopy is that everything, except for the return itself can be done in one space. Canopy is very user friendly. I like that Canopy is always looking for ways to provide more. The customer support is excellent, the response times are always quick. The file sharing option is very easy to use and I love the new document naming AI feature.

Cons

I do not like that so often the client portal tells our clients that they "do not exist" and they have to log out of the portal to fix this. It is an easy fix, however I feel the issue has lasted a long time and we experience the issue with our clients often.

Good over the last 5 years, it has come a long way! Clients seem to love the portal and the ability to see all their documents securely.

Pros

Not having the ability to integrate invoicing into QBD, use a another payment processor in the program, and editing and then signing a PDF.

The user-friendly interface makes Canopy a no brainer. I have worked at a large firm and clients much prefer using this for file sharing, making payments and having everything through one app.

Cons

As the company is still growing, there are still a lot of features being rolled out. I look forward to see them continue to roll out new items. I am looking forward to CRM API linking with CCH Axcess and their tax software so changes made in Canopy can be sent directly to Axcess vs. updating manually.

Overall, I like Canopy. I do believe that there is a lot more kinks to be worked out for the software; however, it has a lot of potential.

Pros

I like the ability to to set up tasks from various places (task bar, client profile, client list, via email).

Cons

I don't like the fact that I can't message me team outside of a task in the software. I always have to message within a task only. I also don't like the fact that I cannot bulk assign tasks within the task area, only within the client list. Additionally, the search bar in the client list does not allow me to search, select, and search again, which makes bulk assigning tasks more tedious.

Pros

Cons

Price is a bit high, some file issues happen and workflow not always flexible. Few bugs here and there can slow things down.

The software is not perfect, but they do a great job of listening to feedback. They are continuously making improvements.

Pros

The software is easy to use for us internally as well as for our clients. Our firm has drastically benefited from the workflow, file management and client management features. We look forward to moving over our time and billing to have everything under one login.

Cons

We would love to see a more robust Home-Admin page, bulk e-sign requests from templated letters (engagement letters), roles by contact to integrate with tasks to populate assignees (e.g., Partner, Bookkeeper, Preparer, Reviewer, etc.), limit parent task completion to select users (to avoid false completed tasks), share documents with non-portal users, send invoices to non-portal users, parent-sub invoicing, time & billing improvements, allow for folder templates to be applied when tasks are applied, allow for doubling clicking on a file to default to "Edit File" instead of preview mode, allow to search spouses on mobile, allow for additional formatting in Notes section.

Reason for choosing Canopy

Easy of use, multiple product offerings under one login, mobile, Sales Rep was great, Feel Trail was very important to get a feel for the product, price point.
