### "Blackboard, learn in a complex fashion "

September 7, 2022

5.0

If you compare this to operating systems, blackboard provides a more linux/windows experience. The platform is robust and complex with a lot to offer, but this pro at the same time makes it a downside since it is not user friendly compared to other market competitors. As a student who used it for 3+ years. I understand and appreciate what the platform provides but I prefer simplicity over complexity.

Pros

The big scale design of the platform is ideal to have all your academic needs in one. Access to a combine calendar allowing for easy visualization of homeworks, projects and tasks. Easy view of currents classes and course materials. With the years of experience this platform is reliable and complete.

Cons

Even though the complexity is robust, sometimes it can be overwhelming for students and ease of access across the platform is not the best compared to other market competitors.

### "Blackboard has Potential! "

May 6, 2025

3.0

I think Blackboard has good potential but it is intimidating for some students who switch from competitors.

Pros

Blackboard is a good software for educators and for higher education students, and it has the functions for many different aspects of higher education.

Cons

Blackboard Learn is difficult to navigate in comparison to its competitors. It is harder to pick up on than other software. Once it is figured out, it is good software but it is more difficult.

### "A decent LMS, but there are better ones out there that have less workability issues"

October 7, 2019

4.0

I have used both Blackboard and Moodle in the past, and I found them very similar for what they offered. I would have been fine using Blackboard indefinitely had I not found out about Canvas, which is what we are using now and I am absolutely it's biggest fan!

Pros

I used Blackboard for almost 10 years, and it was a decent LMS for my needs. When Blackboard Collaborate came out, it was even better because it added a new layer of possibilities (I could have several webinar/conversations going, merge conversations, and/or present to different groups at one time). However, there were always bugs in the system, even though we updated constantly. The Blackboard app was also very limited.

Cons

Too many bugs and freezes; many of my students had issues with accessing links when they used different internet browsers. Good for a small school or business, but not larger ones.

Reason for choosing Blackboard

Statistics for Blackboard showed that it was the most user-friendly for a variety of ages, and we have students of all backgrounds and ages, so it was imperative to find something adaptable. However, I have to say that since finding Canvas as our new LMS, it is MUCH easier for our techno-challenged students.

### "Reliable where it counts"

October 20, 2022

4.0

Pros

Blackboard is a rather intuitive learning platform, packed with a huge amount of features. If you need it for your school, it can be done. There were also a number of training materials and good customer support. It's reliable, which means students and instructors will know when to expect outages and prepare accordingly.

Cons

The UI, until recently, was a bit stale and outdated in appearance. Thankfully this has been updated and seems more modernistic now. It is also a bit more expensive than alternatives.

Alternatives considered

Reason for choosing Blackboard

### "After the pandemic, Blackboard Learn became a staple for online education"

April 21, 2023

5.0

Pros

I like that it organizes courses in a very neat way, the website is easy to navigate and looks great visually. The calendar is very helpful.

Cons

It's not very easy to use for teachers. They often have a hard time understanding all of the features Blackboard provides.

### "LMS Solution for Large Companies "

December 23, 2024

5.0

Ideal for large companies and businesses looking for all tools to make online learning pleasant and formative. Blackboard Learn, now Anthology, truly has endless resources to manage both users and courses in few clicks, implement many tricks to make it an intuitive experience. All educators might need is at stone's throw: assigning roles, building tests and assignments, real-time updates, text generation or creation with the help of Ai, all formats of files, to upload and download. Blackboard Learn is going the right way with its constant changes.

Pros

Blackboard Learn, now Anthology, revolutionized online and distance learning with amazing features in one place; its intuitive interface, different tools and integrations are all there to make the learning process smooth and enjoyable. Educators can manage courses and users in few clicks, have an idea about their activity stream, set assignments and tests with the help of Ai. In fact, introducing Ai tools brought Blackboard Learn to the fore: you can generate texts, activities, tests and assignment away from ChatGPT based platforms.

Cons

I have few words on what is missing in Blackboard Learn particularly system requirements: I often experience system crashes and lagging with Blackboard Learn platform. I still have something against cloud-based solutions as the file size with Blackboard Learn does not allow large files, which is weird, educators often need large files. One more thing, it is not ideal for small businesses.

### "Inclusive Application for Students and Professors"

July 21, 2025

4.0

Pros

Blackboard organizes classes and other courses for students in an easily accessible way. Class days, virtual classrooms, and online chatrooms for students are all organized in one application.

Cons

Blackboard tends to aggregate some due dates for student assignments but not others. This tends to be an issue for many users.

### "Learning Management System that Meets Your Basic Needs"

January 8, 2025

4.0

Back in college, I used it for posting and responding to class discussions, and submitting my assignments. I feel as an LMS platform it offered quite basic functions.

Pros

I like the discussion board feature as the feature is the most used.

Cons

The user interface design is a bit outdated compared to nowadays LMS platforms. I think the colors, fonts, and the overall interface can be improved.

### "An Honest Review of Blackboard"

April 12, 2024

4.0

Pros

Blackboard was the tool faculty used most to relay any information about grades, curriculum changes, and other announcements. It made it easier to navigate individual courses, especially in the circumstances in which I needed to miss class. I used Blackboard for four years and could not have survived college without it.

Cons

I think the biggest con of Blackboard Learn is the esthetics. Unlike other learning management systems such as Canvas, the Blackboard Learn interface simply feels a little more outdated. That being said, with this being my main con, it was overall a wonderful tool in my undergraduate education.

### "blackboard Learn for undergraduate classes"

April 12, 2021

5.0

I used blackboard as a graduate student and I have been using it now as an instructor for my larger chemistry classes with 200 to 250 students, and it is really very helpful, makes my classes run smoothly.

Pros

it is easy to post all assignments, class materials, notes and grades using blackboard. Especially for larger classes I don't have to print the paper copy, posting the class material on blackboard will help students to print and refer to the material easily. Gradebook is one of the best features of blackboard, I have quizzes almost everyday for my students, posting these quizzes grades were very straightforward using blackboard. I have also used blackboard for online quizzes and exams, and for lab exams.

Cons

Blackboard gets slower when many people are using at the same time and some times it becomes unavailable due to maintenance(but we do get notice prior to it). other than that I had no issue with it.

### "Does the job and has everything you need"

December 28, 2021

4.0

I like that it does a little bit of everything. Some other professors at my university liked to rely on BB Learn for everything, including video-conference and online exams. Being as feature rich as it is, BB Learn has the problem that the user interface might be very challenging for some people. I guess you either really like it or really don't, so when it doesn't click you can get frustrated by a lot of things. Still, for the people loving it, they will make the most out of it. One of the best tools out there. Easy to recommend for general purposes.

Pros

I like that if you're a power user and your students get into it, this is probably the only eLearning tool you will ever need. It has everything from homework assignments to actual video-conference; besides of the usual tools like forums and work groups. The online exams are very useful, specially if you don't want to manually grade tons and tons of tests.

Cons

I don't like the user interface. Most of the tools are one more click away than I think they should. Very useful things like the exams are really powerful, but creating them is so awkward that sometimes you prefer to just handle a document.

### "Your new classroom (digital)"

May 26, 2022

4.0

The experience that Blackboard gives you is satisfactory since several other platforms, its management system between courses, and the power to upload files or open documents that teachers upload to their respective courses, are not as easy to do as in blackboard, since the software is very friendly for students like us and makes it not cost us work in performing all its functions that it gives us.

Pros

Being still a student, I love the ease with which I can move within the interface and change courses because if you have several subjects, you can easily locate them and see the content very easily. Inside the software, you can see practically everything as if it were a classroom since you can hold virtual meetings, see your content/tasks to do, see your final grades, take your final exams, etc. It is a platform that stands out for its excellence in education since the page rarely crashes or presents some difficulties.

Cons

It may be difficult at first to navigate through the different menus/pages/courses because the platform does not give us that simply look the first time we see it, as unlike its competitors in the market, this one has a slightly less friendly view. But it is rescued if for example our school/university gives us within Blackboard a small tutorial on the essentials you should know about this software. But honestly, I do not see many cons to Blackboard because it is a platform that gives us what we are looking for and that is why it is one of the top e-learning software.

### "How Blackboard Contributed to My College Success"

September 15, 2023

5.0

Blackboard Learn is an invaluable tool for universities across the country. It removes much of the unneeded paperwork via online assignments that automatically grade themselves (which is also wonderful on the student side, receiving immediate feedback). My college experience was improved by having Blackboard in it, as I had been to schools with inferior software that was more frustrating to utilize.

Pros

Blackboard is an easy to use learning management system that eases the stress of juggling college courses for the student and professor both. Blackboard is easy to format, and very conducive to discussion between professors and students via the discussion board or the other tools provided.

Cons

When I was a college freshman, it was one of the first years my university used Blackboard. This caused a slight learning curve between the professors as they used the website the first year, which they asked for patience for. This is understandable, however, and in my sophomore-senior year the professors had a firm grasp of the program and it was not an issue.

### "Functional, with some philosophical flaws"

November 8, 2021

3.0

It served its purpose and I don't recall any major issues with use, but when I graduated high school I was delighted to switch to Canvas in college instead. Everything about Blackboard struck me, as a student, as outdated and depressing.

Pros

Blackboard is easy to learn and usually intuitively easy for any goal you have. It helps coordinate large teams or classes, and with creative use can be set up to use most styles of teaching (group discussions, online learning, video/attachments, etc).

Cons

My concerns with Blackboard are at the philosophical level. From the way it is systematically set up, you can tell that it uses some outdated methods of teaching. Use as a student can feel oppressive, with students too easily shut down and overruled and the general aesthetic vibe being a bit darker and more confined than examples such as Canvas.

### "A helpful LMS from the student perspective."

April 7, 2023

3.0

I think that overall it was functional and did the job. I think there is room for improvement, but it functions in the way you'd expect from an LMS.

Pros

I liked that you could set it to send reminders about when upcoming assignments were due. It was very helpful from that perspective.

Cons

I thought the user interface was clunky and needed work. It was sometimes hard to navigate and there would often be times where students would have to ask how to do something in the platform.

### "Blackboard for university students"

November 12, 2022

5.0

Effective learning for students and improving outcomes. Digitalization of curriculum so universities may keep up to date.

Pros

An excellent platform to conduct courses for students , uploading relevant course work, setting assessments and also promoting discourse on a course forum. The product is simple to use and is extremely user friendly. With a short course, students are able to effectively utilise the system and with many online options for assistance, it really helps those learners who are unsure.

Cons

Support could be better at times and a complicated process to register users.

### "A Good Software but Needs Updating"

August 29, 2021

3.0

Blackboard Learn is a good software, but it needs some updating to look more current. If it looked more current, customers could take advantage of all the functions of this software. I used it in a very basic way simply because I did not like the look of the interface.

Pros

This software allowed me to view my assignments for college and check my grades as well. Instructors used Blackboard to post important announcements and assignments. Overall, the software was easy to navigate and easy to understand. I liked the "Announcements" board of this software as it allowed professors to post important messages that could be found in a single place. The "Alert" feature was also very useful when there was a grade or assignment update.

Cons

Blackboard has many features, but I was not able to take full advantage of them because of how the platform itself looked. The Blackboard platform, especially the black bar on the left hand side, was always confusing and the site itself looked pretty old. When my university actually switched over to Canvas, students missed the layout of Blackboard, but not the actual software, which looked like it was several years old. If the actual interface looked better, I think it would be easier to navigate.

### "Blackboard - Really clunky!"

March 5, 2020

2.0

At our institution Bb Learn instructions sometimes don't match the local implementation.

Pros

What I like most about the software is what is is \*supposed\* to do: serve as a total course management system.

Cons

Everything about Blackboard is clunky — at least as it is set up in our university. Operations that should be drag and drop require multiple clicks. Nearly every function in Blackboard is present in other generic software and works more efficiently. In addition, Blackboard (as set up in our school) forces templates onto teachers, Redoing the templates into usable form takes lots of clicks. Here are two examples of the most egregious design errors. 1. The Bb gradebook. It vaguely resembles like Excel or Google sheets in how functions. But unlike spreadsheets where one can easily duplicate columns and reassign formulas, the Gradebook requires separate multiple-menu-click operations for every column creation, every grade entry and every grade change. We find little flexibility in creating grading formulas, compared to off-the-shelf spreadsheet programs. And the import-export functions of Bb gradesheets to generic spreadsheets is so clunky that it is unusable. 2. Course duplication. Bb allows the teacher to duplicate a course. Except it doesn't really work. If you try and duplicate the course you taught in the year 2020 for use in 2021, you find that Blackboard will duplicate the general template for all university courses without importing all of the eaacher's innovations.
