March 27, 2019 4.0 I am currently developing some bot projects plus a game plugin on GitHub. Also, I put my docker images there for my company's panel. GitHub allows me to version and view my projects even when I am not on my main computer. Which is very great since I have to take another laptop to work outside. Pros The settings of each repository are easy to read and modify. Also, it integrates with Git super well. Provides simple control and access overall. Cons There is no built-in cloud CI, which is a bit disappointing for me. But I can still use some alternatives for my continuous integration like CircleCI! Pros GitHub is a great place for hosting project repositories and contributing to open source projects. Ideal place for opensource project as it is widely used by developers and organisations for hosting there public and private repositories. Features like pull request code review and protected branches are one of the best features that help me to visually understand the code submitted by other and help me decide whether it is worth merging or not. Built in git-diff viewer is another one of the feature that help me visualise the code with different code based colour schemes. Almost 99.99% up-time is another plus point that ensure the repositories would be available for the contributors to pull and push anytime they want. Cons My main dislike for GitHub is its high cost private repositories. When it comes to Freelancers developers such type of expenses plays important role in their overall expenditure. Would recommend others do the same. Pros The UX/UI is clean, and our developers all came in with prior GitHub experience. It’s a straightforward service that works better than other options (we switched from BitBucket). Cons The pricing is competitive but slightly higher than Bitbucket at the low end of team size, which is an inconvenience. This lets me safely experiment with code and I can easily rollback my changes when I mistake or if I decide not to keep an experimental feature I have implemented. Pros I like how I can store my software projects on the GitHub server and how easy it is to clone a repository and use it locally on my development computer. I now have several GitHub repositories for my personal software projects and for my company's software projects. It allows for easy access to see and modify source code, fork and make pull requests to be merged back in. Pros We use GitHub Enterprise at work, and so far my experience using it has been positive. We use it for committing our code and we do builds off of it from Jenkins, we also even do code reviews on it before it gets merged into our master branches. Cons The rate limits were an issue with our Jenkins deployments after switching over to their 2-factor authentication; it took a while for us to fix the issues with our Jenkins deployments. Pros Github has a lot of reach than any other code hosting platform. This allows for a lot of exposure by reading open source code and participating in development open source projects. Github has a nice and easy to use user interface. The formatting for example markdown is also great and makes discoverability of items and clauses easy. Github can be integrated with numerous other services such as CI/CD tools. With the acquisition of Github by Microsoft, new changes have been made that are very important such as: Unlimited private repositories. Github Sponsors where anyone can sponsor open source projects. etc Cons Nothing so far... works like a charm. A feature request would be, get statistics of repositories, such as number of visits.
