I've never run into technical faults or found anything I needed to do that it couldn't do. My favorite thing about FreeAgent is that my accountant can access the platform and see everything I can. That makes getting information to my accountants or asking questions incredibly slick. Cons I moved to FreeAgent from Xero because it's what my accountant knew how to use. I think Xero has slightly better tech and integrations so I would say I don't find FreeAgent as engaging to use. It's hard to criticize for that though because although it's nice to integrate with other systems, I haven't had any major issues getting information into FreeAgent as required. From sole trader to setting up and managing my solo-company. Pros Easy to learn: I could start from recording basic expenses to manage my bills and invoices. Cons Not sure. I found harder to understand reports and some initial set-ups because I don't have a background in accounting, but it all made sense whith the help of customer support and later my accountant. As the title says, it has all the bells and whistles (especially for small businesses). Pros Freeagent covers all my needs. I'm no accountant or don't have a big business so maybe it's missing some features, but for me it's great. (For transparency I get it for free as I'm with Natwest). Being able to use this on my phone or desktop is great. It picks up all of my Natwest transactions and automatically categorises them into different types of expenses or income (ie advertising, Web hosting, office equipment...) and applies standard VAT and adds a description. You just have to go through the list and approve them to make sure its filled in properly (which most are correct). Cons Again for me it does meet all of my needs. I suppose one thing I didn't quite understand as it uses many accounting terminologies, however they do have a breakdown of what certain things mean, it just means having to read up on it. Director Accounting Used the software for: 2+ years ### "Excellent option for sole traders who bank with Natwest or Mettle" October 19, 2023 4.0 I use this for my own personal self employed accounts and for various clients - property, uber driver, charity and it works really well. For one of my limited companies - I used Freeagent to file the annual accounts. It was quick, simple and easy. I've been very pleased with it. Pros Freeagent has a great invoice design. I like the fact that for a small business - you can get this software and an online bank account at a very reasonable price. I've used the accounts filing option - and it worked. I was delighted and it has saved me so much time! Cons Sometimes, I just think its a bit clunky and could be smoother. It does things I don't like e.g. when a sum is received in and is paying 2 invoices - I don't like the way it split payments. I think the chart of accounts could just be a little bit more user friendly, but for a sole trader, if your books are simple - it does the job nicely. Reason for choosing FreeAgent I got a mettle bank account to keep my business transactions separate from my personal, so this was why I switched over to FreeAgent. It's free, and it made sense, and it was easy to use. Switched from [Microsoft Excel](https://www.capterra.com/p/176574/Excel/) I wanted a good invoicing system (up to this point I was using word documents), and I wanted to separate my business income from my personal account, so I got Mettle Bank, and FreeAgent came free with it so it made sense to make the switch. It's reassuring to know the accounts are in order. Pros It's straight forward, easy to set up and use. Everything you need to manage your accounts is in plain sight rather then you needing to know there is a completely different process somewhere else that actually needs to be completed. The processes are quick and easy to work out. Cons Nothing much to be honest. It would be better if it was easier to link to other programs that you use but this can be overcome with a bit of thought. We have tried one of the leading alternatives but came back as we were so pleased with it. Pros The billing and invoicing functionality is a key feature of the product and works very well. They send a Monday motivator email summarising your agenda for the week on Monday mornings. This includes items such as unbilled hours logged, payments to approve and bills to chase or pay. MFA is supported for increased security. Cons There are few things that I don't like to be honest, the only one that can be annoying is the bank feeds can sometimes be a little slow to show items. A manual refresh option for bank feed data would be useful. Switched from [Xero](https://www.capterra.com/p/120109/Xero/) We found the workflow in Freeagent was a much better fit for our needs. Having previously used Xero for our book-keeping, I found it had the same great functionality but a much slicker design. It's simplicity and ease of use is the best thing going for it. Cons Had some issues at the beginning with connecting our bank feeds but this was sorted out quickly by the team at FreeAgent - can't think of any real faults with the software. I also get accountancy help. Very easy to understand the layout and add accounts to it. Pros FreeAgent is so easy to use. The customer support is fantastic. FreeAgent integrates with your bank accounts (bank feed), so you always have an accurate picture of your finances. NatWest Bank owns FreeAgent, so you know there is a good name behind it. Cons In the cash flow projection, one field resets itself, but they have taken that onboard and will tweak the code. Review Source SC Sam C. Does everything I need as a small business, and can easily send information to the accountant at the end of the year. Cons The bank feed seems a bit tempermental at times. It has eliminated data entry errors and allows me to ensure that my books are in compliance instead of spending time importing transactions. Cons I observed difficulties in managing invoices when the currency used is foreign currency. I could not alter the exchange rates whenever they had disparities I noticed. Review Source AW Adam W. Pros I like how easy to use the site is. I mainly use it on web and I'm not sure if there's an app but coming in to work, having never used this before, it was easy to find my way around it and get on with work without training. Cons I miss the ability of exporting data into Spreadsheet and trailing trough pages of invoices to highlight and copy so I can paste into Spreadsheet is tiresome. It is easy to either download the invoice as a PDF and email it manually or do so via FreeAgent itself. It makes submitting your tax return very, very easy. I like how it can take you from being self-employed to being a LTD company. The way that it recognises some transactions and automatically categories them is great too. Cons There are two things I don't like about the software. There isn't an easy way to record simplified expenses. You have to add them manually, which isn't ideal for how it should work. The second is that if someone pays by card, it doesn't carry all the info from FreeAgent to Stripe. For example, email address so they get a card receipt instantly. Review Source Stephen H. February 8, 2018 5.0 Pros FreeAgent is a fully-featured accounting and invoicing web app that comes with a great little mobile app too. It has a really clear and easy-to-use interface, making it easy to navigate and produce invoices, check your accounts for selected periods, track your time, manage projects... the list goes on. But for all the functionality, it never feels cluttered. I've experienced great support whenever I've asked for it and it hasn't ever produced any unexpected errors or bugs. It just works. Cons I wanted to recommend this product to my wife for her business but it's just a little bit too expensive for a startup small sole trader company like hers. Pros Perfect for freelancers and small teams, FreeAgent includes all the aspects needed to control accounts, create / send invoices and keep an eye on projects. Highly recommended for any solo practitioners. Cons If you plan to grow and scale your team, it can be a bit limiting, however it is still a great tool for smaller teams and individuals. Used the software for: 1-2 years ### "Love it" February 8, 2018 5.0 Pros Exceptionally easy to use and easy to learn. I keep the tab open every day. It's easy to "undo" if you make a mistake in an invoice. There's basically nothing that can't be undone by reverting to draft. The recurring invoices tool is really helpful. I don't use the feature where it'll email invoices/reminders. I prefer to do that myself and it's really easy — nothing to really keep track of since I invoice all clients on the same day each month. They make it easy to label bank transactions so as long as I remember to do that once a month or so, all my accounting reports are always current. I don't have to spend too much time on accounting and I don't really have any complaints. The customer service is always fantastic. Cons I wish the time tracking feature were just a little slicker. I use Toggl for time tracking, and then I import hours for each client each month. Not a big deal, but one of those little things that would put it over the top. Layout options for invoices are very limiting unless you create your own CSS file. Can't change account type without contacting admin - ie I mistakenly set up as a sole trader instead of private ltd company and says I have to contact customer service to change it. We specifically use it for payroll, invoicing and accountancy and find the integrated approach saves time and helps us quickly track accountancy errors and oversights. Cons The live link to the bank account statements is often glitchy and can cause a headache for those trying to account for every transaction. After researching similar web-based solutions, I decided upon subscribing to Freeagent. I wouldn't be able to run my business without it. Everything I need, from invoicing and clients database, to expense filing and completing my self-assessment is there, easy to use and access. When I needed some help or clarifications about something, the staff were prompt and eager to help me and made sure my issues were resolved in any case. Highly recommended software & service! Cons I find that the mobile app has limited functionality compared to the desktop site. Sole trader Sports Used the software for: 6-12 months ### "Early review" February 15, 2021 4.0 Better than Quickbooks in terms of reconciling bank account, and bringing the feed in reliably, but this assumption against large numbers of individual customers is a deal breaker. Pros Reconciles some invoice payments that only need approval, an improvement on Quickbooks. Cons Very clunky for adding customers for invoicing. If you have lots of "retail" customers as I do, and send invoices to large numbers of customers, setting them up is a pain, the system seems to assume that you have a small number of commercial customers with multiple contacts at those companies. When making a new invoice you have to go through an alphabetical list of companies, you can't search, and for ease I made that entry an email address. This now means that of course not all people have an email address that is clearly them/their name. Irritating and enough to make me look elsewhere. Reason for choosing FreeAgent Price, and simplicity for smaller players. Booking time spent with a client turns into an invoice turns into a payment at the bank - and all this is tracked. What used to take hours in excel is all at a glance in FreeAgent. Cons I wish that there was a way to use their time tracking module as a separate product. I no longer run a business but would love to use their time tracker with my team at the larger org I now work for.
