the amount of the data that is available in one place, it has a vast amount of data that is very helpful.

the difficulty of just gathering easy data points is very difficult, it needs to be more intuitive..

I rate Morningstar Direct highly and the recent product development (such as the Research and Analytics module) is very promising and testament to the continued investment into the platform

Pros

Self service platform that offers users a depth and breadth of information. Lots of tools built for specific research tasks Equities analytics is seen to be strong

Cons

The ability to stay in a module whilst accessing another module. i.e. being able to stay in the workspace module whilst accessing the asset flows module would be super useful. Fixed income analytics is seen to be relatively weak.

My overall experience has been great. Morningstar Direct provides deep data, robust analytics, and customizable tools for portfolio evaluation and fund comparison. It’s particularly useful for creating client-ready reports, though the interface could be more intuitive.

Pros

I like how comprehensive the data coverage is. Morningstar Direct consolidates fund, stock, and portfolio information in one platform, making it easy to compare performance, risk, and fundamentals across asset classes. The quality and reliability of the data are excellent.

Cons

Occasionally, data updates or custom calculations can lag or take a while to load, especially when working with large datasets or detailed performance reports.

### "The platform from hell"

Poor. The primary reason for me to use Morningstar is to retrieve data and use it somewhere else, because I am not using Direct. Wasting time looking at the loading screen and clicking around (with approximately zero shortcuts, for some reason) until I get a crash or have to relog is not worth my time. Also, I’m not a fan of surprise changes, such as datapoints no longer being supported.

Pros

High-quality fundamental data on funds, both highly relevant and accurate. Wide data coverage. Lab is a great improvement to the overall experience.

Cons

The platform is extremely outdated. Everything is slow, and the structure is unintuitive. There are too many features and single-use cases. The app is also inconsistent, with multiple issues such as having to relog, indefinite loading, or just flat-out crashes.

Pros

The versatility and broad scope of tools and data. Number of ways to represent data to stakeholders and clients.

Cons

The program can be a little slow at times and not all desired functions can be automated. The team however is always working on improvements

Are use Morningstar advisor workstation. Overall I would say my experience is mediocre. If you could fix your technical issues and put Morningstar advisor workstation on the web, rather than on the desktop, I think a lot of the problems would be resolved. It is something you have ignored for years. You know it’s well overdue.

Pros

I don’t use Morningstar direct. I use Morningstar advisor workstation. It contains very helpful research capability and report production.

Cons

It glitches, I have frequent software issues where I have unknown errors that constantly require me to speak to your technical staff and they don’t know how to fix things and it just result in a frustrating experience.

Overall satisfied, and I also appreciate the efforts made to provide a Python API and modernize the graphical user interface.

Pros

The depth of the data and analyses available on the fund universe, and additionally the quality of the research on individual equity securities.

Cons

The VBA API could be better, and it would also be beneficial to make searching for data points linked to specific keywords easier.

I have used Morningstar Direct for about 6 months now and I absolutely love it. It has made my life so much easier as an analyst. I no longer have to manually to analysis as Presentation studio does everything for me.

Pros

It is so easy to use and I haven't seen something it can't do. My favorite part of Morningstar Direct is Presentation studio.

Cons

There isn't anything I can think of that I dislike about Morningstar Direct. The only issue I've had is the xray reports take a bit long to load and sometimes you have to log out and log in again for it to run.

I think it is important to distinguish Morningstar Direct (the tool) from Morningstar Direct (the customer experience). The tool itself is fantastic and recommend it highly. The customer experience has been rather unsatisfactory. I have had a net negative experience with their customer support team, constantly being pitched sales rather than genuine help on my research projects. It feels shady and \[sensitive content hidden\] like. I wish they would change this, since it wasn't like this in years past

Pros

Morningstar is very easy to use with an incredibly user-friendly learning curve. Having such powerful data at your fingertips makes it my go-to tool for certain types of investment research.

Cons

It can be difficult to find data points. There are hundreds to parse through and a great deal of them return empty values. You really need to know the exact spelling / nomenclature of the data point you need in advance.

Decent. Customer support is timely. Proposal Tool initiative with Advisor Workstation is glitchy and not as intuitive as can be.

Pros

Ability to create portfolio reviews and research products. Various formulas and graphs built in the system are helpful.

Cons

Abbreviations used, the BIGGEST PAIN POINT. There is no consistent logic for US vs U.S. vs U S funds. Sometimes the name is spelled out, sometimes not, sometimes missing certain portions of the name. Hard to know what currency used.

Availability of Data is good. Charting functionality is a good tool but could be more leveraged with easier functionality.

Cons

New Excel API process is overly slow and burdensome making users log in to MSD every instance of excel.

It's a very, very old experienc with MSTAR (<20y)!Experience is globally good and conclusive. On the negative side, we are seeing more and more slowness, and on the ETfs performance is sometimes poorly informed, or false, or absent. We tend to prefer Bloomberg for ETfs.the data are sometimes false, not updated

1/Modul Performance Reporting 2/Portfolio Management, with Model portfolios, and Custum benchmarks.. 3/Portfolio Analysis for the Total Portfolio Attribution 4/Workspace (chart Template....) 5/Excel Addin

Cons

1/The fact that we need to ask our IT do do the Upload of last version...Procedure is too long internally (Ticket service now....). We are not able to upload by ourselves the Upload of the new versions 2/ ETF performance is sometimes poorly informed, or false, or absent. We tend to prefer Bloomberg for ETfs.

Pros

The range of possibilities that can be achieved with the tool. Presentation Studio is a particularly valuable tool.

Cons

The tool is not the most intuitive on the market. I find it quite complicated to learn and become familiar with all the features it offers. Many interesting features can be “hidden.”

My overall experience with Direct has been great. When I first got licensed, the customer success team scheduled very informative training sessions which helped me build a good knowledge base. I am impressed by the user interface and how easy and organized it feels. There are some areas where it could be improved.

Pros

Morningstar's has a great user interface, easy to use and very friendly and responsive customer service. The visuals make it very intuitive to find insights in the dataset.

Cons

On the performance reporting function, I would like to have the option to see the data formatted in rows too instead of just columns. When looking at a larger dataset (for example, daily returns and ranks for the past 5 years), it is easier to scroll rows than through columns.

Overall, I really enjoy using the functionality within Morningstar Direct but I think it could potentially be optimized for a smoother client experience.

Pros

I like the Workspace function and being able to compare many funds in a specific Morningstar category across a number of metrics.

Cons

The desktop applications can be slow at times, and also seems to slow down my computer. Additionally, the export function to Excel can be slow or freeze entirely.

Pros

Morningstar Direct is the gold standard for peer group analysis and fund research. The depth of the database is unparalleled for fund comparisons in my view. The presentation Studio is a great tool for building reports too.

Cons

The main issue with Direct is lag and loading times (sometimes, including glitches at Presentation Studio). The interface needs improvement in my view. The learning curve is relatively steep compared with other providers; it could be more intuitive. Sometimes, it could be a bit "US-centric".

Mstar direct is a powerful tool for working in multi-asset asset managment, handling fund level information, asset allocation, deep dive analysis.

Pros

I enjoy the comprehensiveness of fund data. The excel-addin is also very useful, making automated reports possible. Fund screening and peer group creation are some of the features that Mstar direct leads.

Cons

Sometimes data fields are not clearly defined. Some data points were similarly named, and not all available. The recent glitch on login prompt for excel was widely known but the fixing takes too long.

Pros

I like that there are so many datapoints available, it is truly amazing on how many datapoints we can classify our funds.

Cons

Support is taking a while to respond. Sometimes when I am reaching by email to clarify or correct something it is taking a while and I need to escalate internally.

Far better than the competition, such as FE, having features such as style and factor analysis. I encountered no errors and it ran quicker than FE while having more features. I believe it could be better if the interface was designed more intuitively, some key features are difficult to find but the support staff are very helpful.

Pros

A breath of analytical tools and such in depth features for portfolio management and analysis. The style and factor analysis features for equity funds makes it far easier to blend to make a risk neutral portfolio.

Cons

Steep learning curve, I don't think the interface is the most intuitive. It is more expensive than the competition like FE analytics.

I like the flexibility in ad hoc questions when reviewing funds. The broad universe and document filing.

Cons

Change in index availability, making MSCI indexes relevant again. The need to you different tools to do different analysis, all fund analysis is not available in PS, performance reporting, worklist an so on.
