### "Perfect for Funds, but Falls Short on Bonds and Macro Data"

May 22, 2025

5.0

I’ve been using Morningstar for many years and overall I’m very satisfied, especially because I mainly use it for funds and ETFs. However, it’s true that Bloomberg provides more comprehensive information when it comes to bonds and macro data such as inflation, GDP, and so on.

Pros

What I like the most is the quantity and quality of information on investment funds at an international level. I love the ability to access it in a very visual format through the Presentation Studio module, as well as the ease of downloading data into Excel.

Cons

What I like the least is the information about bonds and fixed income in general. The information on bonds and fixed income is incomplete. The disclosure of underlying currency exposure could be improved — it should be provided by the fund manager, along with net positions when derivatives are used.

At the time, Morningstar was more cost-effective tha Lipper and provided more comprehensive information, and we found the Presentation Studio functionality particularly useful.

### "New User Feedback"

March 9, 2025

4.0

Morningstar Direct is a powerful and comprehensive platform that provides extensive financial data and analytical tools, making it highly valuable for investment research and portfolio management. Its ability to consolidate market data, fund performance, and risk metrics into a single interface is a major strength. However, as a newer user, I find the platform somewhat complex, with a learning curve that makes it challenging to grasp all its capabilities. Additionally, the lack of Mac compatibility is a drawback, as it limits accessibility for users who prefer macOS. Overall, it is a robust tool, but improvements in usability and platform flexibility would enhance the user experience. \* ALSO\* Please update the excel add in to work on Mac.

Pros

What I liked most about Morningstar Direct is its comprehensive data collection. It provides a vast range of financial data across multiple asset classes, allowing for in-depth analysis and informed decision-making. The platform consolidates market data, fund performance, risk metrics, and qualitative research into a single interface, making it efficient and reliable for investment analysis. This level of data integration helps streamline portfolio management, benchmarking, and strategy development, making it a valuable tool for professionals.

Cons

As a newer user of Morningstar Direct, I find it challenging to fully understand all of its capabilities due to the platform's complexity. While it offers extensive data and analysis tools, navigating and utilizing its full potential requires a steep learning curve. Additionally, the fact that it is only available as a Windows application is a significant drawback for me, as I am a native Mac user. This limitation makes it less convenient and restricts my ability to integrate it smoothly into my preferred workflow.

### "Almost Satisfactory"

October 29, 2025

3.0

Overall good. I wish there were more informative sessions (training) on how to best utilise all of the tools available for fund research, economic and market research and analysis.

Pros

The universe is vast; there is almost every kind of data point you would need for fund analysis. It makes is the leading software on the market for fund manager research.

Cons

There isn't much usable economic and securities data as I would like. We are required to utilise other software to get the latest economic trends which is a hassle when you're more accustomed to the Morningstar interface.

### "Very useful but expensive."

August 13, 2025

4.0

Overall Morningstar is a very useful, user friendly (mostly) software. I use it every day to track model performance or screen new holdings.

Pros

Customer support is fast knowledgeable and professional. Data coverage is extensive, particularly for funds.

Cons

Cost is becoming excessive. Also the latest Excel Add-In release is buggy and requires constant log in.

Alternatives considered

Reason for choosing Morningstar Direct

### "Review of M\* direct"

August 13, 2025

4.0

Overall my experience in direct has been positive. But it is not very intuitive and can feel dated at times. I've tired using Direct lens but I don't find it to be a better alternative.

Pros

What I like most about Direct is the variety of data you have access to and the functionality of various modules. I also very much value the Excel Add-in.

Cons

I have a few main issues with direct. Workspace: -Searching for data points is not dyanamic -Lists of data points when searching is in numerical order by first number (putting 10 over 5) -Searching for funds and categories requires changing universes Presentation Studio: -Working with templates is incredibly difficult. In particular, manipulating text is a huge pain. Additionally trying to adjust benchmarks and time periods is far from intuitive. I also tend to experience data being different from the values shown in direct.

### "Average - analyst at Wealth Manager"

October 28, 2025

3.0

I would say my overall experience is mixed, there are some features that I like, but I am struggling with the new lens. It feels easier to use for creating lists and filtering investments, but find the old lens easier from every other perspective.

Pros

It's quite useful when trying to get a basic understanding of funds in the universe. Also useful when doing fund research, and trying to look for funds that fit a variety of criteria.

Cons

We have repeatedly raised an issue with an equity security being labelled as fixed income, which is yet to be fixed.

Very good tool for our day to day business. We have been using it since 2010 and have always had positive experiences with it.

Pros

Possibilities of the tool which makes it a valuable asset for analysis as well as fund management activies, available data on mutual funds

Cons

Presentation studio is somewhat out of date, and fragile (broken links). It feels rather unflexible.

### "Improved Service "

February 11, 2026

4.0

It's a good experience I like that response times have improved and matters are sorted out quickly. I also like the learning centre and the OnDemand videos it's good to look back and see how one can improve themselves.

Pros

It makes presenting data to the layperson a simple task, I like that it blends the use of many visuals and the options to use the Morningstar templates to be able to tell a story that makes sense

Cons

The lag, it is so slow at times just loading Morningstar will take forever don't get me started on presentation studio because wow.

### "Morningstar User Experience from a Product Analyst"

February 5, 2026

4.0

Very strong - incredibly useful tool for my role as a product analyst at a boutique asset management firm.

Pros

The ability to comprehensively analyse both risk and return metrics across peer universes. Particularly useful for our Value for Money methodology as well as analysing if net flows are driven by outperforming funds.

Cons

PRIIPS/KIIDS often outdated along with the fact that primary/virtual share class classifications are often hard to understand - more supporting literature regarding definitions of the two needed.

### "Reliable and Data-Rich Platform with Room for Improvement"

February 4, 2026

4.0

Pros

What I liked most about Morningstar Direct is how easy it is to use, even though it offers a huge depth of information. It’s easy to find what you need, pull together relevant data points, and run meaningful comparisons without the process feeling overly complicated. I also really appreciate the scale of AUM covered - having such broad market data in one place makes the analysis feel more complete and reliable. Overall, it’s a very practical tool that combines strong functionality with a user-friendly experience.

Cons

It can occasionally be affected by errors or data inconsistencies, which means you sometimes have to double-check figures before relying on them. While these issues aren’t constant, they can slow down workflows when accuracy is critical. Additionally, the cost is relatively high, so it’s important to ensure you are fully utilising the platform to justify the investment.

### "Morningstar Direct User Experience"

February 3, 2026

4.0

The experience with Morningstar is great in general, but probably some improvements are needed on the support team. As we are looking for guidance in several occasions, the team just provides general comments without actually helping to resolve the issues.

Pros

The investment universe that Morningstar covers impress me, as it does help us to perform market analysis or product assessment with the full set of data available.

Cons

When you are searching for a fund / vehicle on Morningstar, the filtering is too complicated, making it so difficult to pull out a complete list like what you may be able to do with Bloomberg.

### "Honest Review - Morningstar Direct"

February 28, 2025

5.0

Overall, I love Direct. I convinced our Dealer to replace Bloomberg with Direct and haven't looked back. Again, more on-going news about companies/economics etc... would be great but besides that, love the system.

Pros

Robustness of the data. I like that it has thousands and thousands of investment types, but also thousands of different data points for analysis.

Cons

Not enough news on investments/countries/economics etc... For example, in Bloomberg, I can type in a specific stock ticker and get weeks and weeks of news on earnings, upgrades/downgrades, anything you can think of to do with the company. Not in Direct...

### "Morningstar Direct - an honest critique"

March 1, 2025

5.0

My overall experience is positive. I have only used it for 5 months. Hopefully with more experience I will have less qualms with the software.

Pros

The product is highly sophisticated and powerful. It has a lot of functionality and helps me with my day-to-day work tasks. I like the Excel-Add in feature. I also like the Presentation Studio and performance reporting modules. I think I'm only using 1% of its overall features. My client liaison officer \[sensitive content hidden\] is always at hand to provide training. The help desk in India always is always accessible with no waiting time. They help with my queries.

Cons

GUI could be more user-friendly. Opening Morningstar Direct is a bit daunting as there are a lot of things staring at you (and you don't know where to start). There are a lot of drop-down boxes and sometimes you could go down the wrong path and then have to start again. Sometimes I don't know whether to start with Workspace or Performance Reporting or Portfolio Management. In terms of data produced, sometimes data that I want is missing. For example: when running a Performance Evaluation report for a Fund, there are blanks in the data for the Fund (investment) for data that I want such as up capture ratio, information ratio, max drawdown (%) etc etc. This data should be available as Morningstar has the Fund data and the benchmark's data. Finally, sometimes the software is a bit slow to run tasks and calculate.

### "KB Mstar Review"

August 28, 2025

4.0

Useful tool to conduct analysis and be able to present this by creating compelling charts and tables. Very responsive customer support reps with capabilities to live share screen and trouble shoot. They get back in quick follow ups when follow up is needed. They are keen of providing training if and when needed on whatever topic related to Mstar of interest to us. It is expensive as it has lots of bells and whistles not everyone uses.

Pros

Available data on funds and tools such as Presentation Studio to create compelling reports and presentations. Easy to learn and navigate through the various capabilities such as workspace, portfolio management, flows etc.

Cons

Time it takes to load reports in presentation studio due to buffering. This has been a legacy issue with Mstar that I hope someday gets fixed.

### "A One Stop Shop for all your investment research and reporting"

August 13, 2025

5.0

Our firm has had a positive experience with Morningstar Direct. This software is only as good as the amount of time you put into it. We've spend significant hours building the reports and fund screening. We have great experiences with the customer service team who is always able to help teach us how to put together the reports we need etc.

Pros

Virtually unlimited data and report options. Running reports on our own model portfolios to review performance and advanced statistics. Fund screening to help identify which funds should be added or subtracted from our asset allocation based models.

Cons

It takes time to learn each report and how to best use all the different functions. Some of the reports can be clunky and require a lot of time with support to understand how to use them.

### "Excellent Data Insights"

October 22, 2025

4.0

Overall, I'm happy with Morningstar when using it; it allows me access to a lot of different tools. I am continuing to learn more, and thanks to our customer relationship manager, have been further developing my skills recently.

Pros

Morningstar is an excellent tool within our toolbox - allowing us to get and extract all of the data we need when looking at funds. I find the search criteria tool particularly useful.

Cons

Occasionally there are periods in which there seem to be outages (outside of AWS) which, in the moment, can be very frustrating if something is required there and then and I am unable to access it.

### "Powerful Analytics Engine, Held Back by Outdated UX"

February 4, 2026

3.0

Morningstar Direct is a robust and data-rich platform that delivers exceptional depth for fund and portfolio analytics. However, its heavy UX and lack of modern usability can create friction in day-to-day workflows. For experienced users, it offers unmatched analytical power, but newer users may struggle without significant training. It’s a workhorse—reliable and comprehensive—but not particularly agile or elegant.

Pros

Morningstar Direct is incredibly powerful when it comes to data coverage, fund analytics, and custom reporting. It offers a comprehensive toolset for in-depth investment research and performance evaluation across a broad range of asset classes and geographies. The ability to build custom universes, apply sophisticated screening criteria, and generate branded outputs is a major plus for asset managers and institutional users.

Cons

The user experience feels outdated and clunky. Navigating the platform can be unintuitive, and it often takes multiple steps to perform relatively simple actions. The interface has not kept pace with more modern SaaS platforms, which can make adoption difficult for new users. Performance can also lag when working with large datasets or complex templates.

I am happy to be a daily user of Morningstar Direct. It works well and the excel add-in is also a big advantage. I also appreciate that they have a remote desktop on demand to open it on a mac.

Pros

I have access to all the data I need, and tailor-made support on demand, with a dedicated analyst to show me how to perform the actions that I need, when I cannot understand how to do them by myself.

Cons

### "Powerful Reporting Tools Backed by Great Support"

October 29, 2025

4.0

My overall experience has been very positive. I have created and scheduled for automatic creation and download many reports, with help from the Morningstar Direct teams, and these reports support my team’s daily analysis. There are still many features I am yet to explore, and I am looking forward to discovering more.

Pros

What I appreciate most about the system is its broad and versatile functionality, which proves highly valuable and engaging for our investment team's work. The regular enhancements and updates further strengthen its utility, while the proactive support from the Customer Success and Support teams plays a crucial role in helping us uncover new capabilities and optimise the use of the system to meet our objectives.

Cons

Sometimes it is not the most intuitive system and takes a while to load necessary information, but with the support of the Customer Success and Support teams, who provide step by step guidance either on a call or as a written guide, the queries get resolved quickly.

### "Investment Consultant for Trust Companies Review"

March 7, 2025

5.0

I use it to create hundreds of portfolios, performance reports, and analyse funds. It can be love and hate, but I think its a very powerful tool overall.

Pros

The comprehensive datasets and ability to create insight in creative and precise ways. The new additions to the client are generally good. For example interactive charts. I see measured efforts to improve the service.

Cons

It was the UI at first, but I've gotten used to it. At the moment, the export to excel function is quite static or fixed. The excel add-in function is not the solution sometimes. I have some difficulty feeling confident that portfolio analysis (return attribution relative to benchmark) is accurate. I also think the template needs expanding or give flexibility for how i want portfolio returns to be reported. The scorecard system is a bit rigid, and I would like to apply more creative scoring systems. Some funds have multiple currencies or multiple listings which creates lots of blank or empty data space. If I add a fund via ISIN, i might get 10 rows of funds, but only 1 of them has data listing.
