### "Comprehensive Investment Platform with Robust Analytics"

February 4, 2026

5.0

My overall experience with Morningstar Direct has been positive. The platform provides a comprehensive and reliable source of investment data, analytics, and research tools that significantly enhance our ability to make informed investment decisions. Its extensive database and customizable reporting features are particularly valuable. However, I also found that the interface can sometimes be complex and challenging to navigate, especially for new users, which may require additional training. Despite this, the depth of information and analytical capabilities make it a powerful tool for our team. Overall, I am satisfied with the platform and see it as an essential resource for our investment analysis and performance monitoring.

Pros

I found Morningstar Direct to be an incredibly comprehensive and user-friendly platform. What I liked most was its extensive database of investment data and analysis tools, which allow for in-depth research and accurate performance tracking. The platform's customizable reports and robust screening features make it easy to analyze various investment options efficiently. Additionally, the ability to access detailed fund ratings and insights helps in making well-informed investment decisions. Overall, Morningstar Direct provides a powerful combination of data, analytics, and user interface that significantly enhances our investment review process.

Cons

While Morningstar Direct offers extensive data and tools, I found that its interface can sometimes be overwhelming due to the sheer volume of information available. Navigating through various features and reports can be time-consuming, especially for new users. Additionally, some of the advanced features require a steep learning curve, which may require additional training to fully utilize the platform’s capabilities. Lastly, the cost of the platform can be high for smaller teams or individual users.

### "My personal views working with MS Direct"

February 4, 2026

4.0

Your overall experience with Morningstar Direct is that it’s a powerful, data‑rich platform that genuinely supports serious investment work—everything from portfolio analysis and model maintenance to research and factsheet production. Its analytics are solid, its data is reliable, and once templates are set up, reporting becomes far more efficient. But at the same time, the platform can feel clunky and slow, and the interface sometimes gets in the way of otherwise straightforward tasks. Custom reports can be fiddly to build, and the cost isn’t trivial. In practice, it’s a tool that delivers strong results and saves real time, but you often find yourself wishing it were a bit faster, more modern, and more intuitive given how much capability sits under the hood.

Pros

Morningstar Direct is strong because it combines high‑quality global data, solid portfolio analytics, and flexible reporting tools all in one place. It lets you analyse performance and risk with confidence, maintain model portfolios efficiently, and produce consistent, professional factsheets with minimal manual effort. Its screening tools, ESG integration, and reliable data infrastructure make it a dependable, day‑to‑day platform for investment research and portfolio management.

Cons

Morningstar Direct’s biggest drawbacks tend to come down to usability and efficiency rather than capability. The interface can feel dated and unintuitive, which means simple tasks sometimes take more clicks than they should. It can also run slowly—especially when working with large datasets or heavy templates—and custom reporting, while powerful, can be fiddly to set up and maintain. On top of that, licensing costs are high, and certain advanced features require extra modules, so the full platform can get expensive for teams. Overall, it’s a strong system, but one that sometimes feels heavier and less streamlined than modern alternatives.

### "Needs basics improved"

February 11, 2026

2.0

At present, not great. The basis functions need to be brought back and improved rather than adding new addition features. Many reports that I have used for years have become very problematic. Constantly having issuing with the system, be it slow, reporting not working, access to reports. Experiencing system outage. The platform is either failing to load entirely or responding so slowly that normal work cannot be completed.

Pros

delivers independent, data‑driven insights that help gather data, research and reports. It has comprehensive fund, equity, and market information. Morningstar’s tools are ok, enabling some screening, portfolio analysis, and comparison across asset classes.

Cons

Constantly having issuing with the system, be it slow, reporting not working, access to reports. Experiencing system outage that is preventing accessing, running reports, or retrieving essential data. The platform is either failing to load entirely or responding so slowly that normal workflows cannot be completed. Attempts to log in time out, freeze. Data queries, performance analytics, unavailable, disrupting routine operational tasks. This issue is affecting productivity and delaying critical deliverables that rely on timely market information. These problems have been reported.

### "Powerful Portfolio Analysis and Professional Client Reporting Tool"

February 4, 2026

5.0

Morningstar Direct is a core tool in my workflow. It offers deep data, strong analytics, and flexible reporting. Portfolio analysis and backtesting support sound investment decisions. Presentation Studio stands out for client reporting and visual clarity. The platform takes time to learn, but the payoff is high once embedded into daily processes.

Pros

Morningstar Direct is strong for portfolio management and strategy backtesting. The depth of data supports detailed analysis across asset classes and time periods. I mainly use Presentation Studio to build custom reporting packs. It turns complex portfolio data into clear, client-friendly visuals. This improves communication and speeds up reporting workflows.

Cons

Morningstar Direct is US centric, so coverage and research depth are stronger for US funds than for South African funds. Reporting works well for equity portfolios, but bond analysis is harder. For many South African funds, underlying bond holdings lack sufficient disclosure. This makes it difficult to assess credit quality and duration with confidence.

### "Great Worktool with some needed improvements needed."

October 22, 2025

4.0

My overall experience is very good and the support I receive from the sales representative assigned to us in Spain, \[sensitive content hidden\] , is very good. He replies right away and tries to ensure whenever possible that our issues are quickly resolved.

Pros

It is one of the most comprehensive databases available. It allows you to filter the universe, create lists and compare them at many levels, covering most of my needs.

Cons

I cannot stand that it continuously asks me to re-sign in throughout the day. It is extremely frustrating to see that box continuously throughout the day. It does not offer as much granularity in a number of asset classes as I would like. This means the category is not always appropriate and comparisons become irrelevant. It would be great to see the Fund also compared quantitatively to its own benchmark. Not many funds have analyst coverage. The institutional share class in the base currency of the Fund is not easily identified. It is very hard to find data points by which to filter the universe. A smart search with a contains button would be great. You already offer it once you have an investment list but not sure why not available when you are in the Search Criteria area.

### "Good but why is there no 10 year cumulative fair value NAV total return data point in Excel??"

February 10, 2026

4.0

Pros

The Excel plus in (save as noted below) is very helpful and the Presentation Studio allows us to create informative graphs and charts (albeit there is a steep learning curve and it seems to be impossible to change colours of stocks across pages without updating the pages individually; changing it for the "report" does not appear to flow through).

Cons

It does not provide a data output via the Excel plug in for cum fair NAV total return for a 10 year period, which significantly hampers our work as this is a crucial metric when working with UK closed ended investment funds. Instead, we have to use the presentation studio or refer to the Association of Investment Companies' website (e.g.https://www.theaic.co.uk/companydata/scottish-mortgage-investment-trust) which curiously uses Morningstar as its data provider - if the data is available from both of those sources using Morningstar Direct why is it not available in Excel?? A Morningstar license is also very costly so we are reviewing our data provider arrangements this year.

### "Persistent system issues and poor support limit the value of Morningstar Direct"

February 4, 2026

1.0

Frustrating and time consuming. Platform limitations and support shortcomings affect overall user experience.

Pros

Very useful to attend Morningstar's office to meet the Customer Success Manager and hear from other clients what they used the platform for.

Cons

We identified an error in the New Morningstar Direct which causes investment list to be completely reset when opening the same list in the legacy MSD view. This bug was replicated and raised to Morningstar to implement a fix. We never received an acknowledgement of raising the bug. This took around half a day to reset the investment list to the prior specifications. As a result, we are still using the legacy Morningstar which does seem to be quite slow compared to other software we use. Several of our data points were turned off in August 2025 with very little notice. We had to reach out for the documentation on which datapoints were being replaced - which was not a one to one mapping and so was unhelpful. This required around a day of time to assess whether the new data points were appropriate replacements. Some of the responses to the queries on the new data points were bizarre - i.e. EBITDA LTM is not reported well so they suggested applying EBITDA Margin% to Business Revenue, which is using derivative information to recalculate the input. We were also advised to use spreadsheet transformations to get data in the format which it was provided in prior to the data point switch, e.g. multiplying ROIC to make it a value between 1-100 (as per the old data point) instead of 0-1 (as per the new data point) without having the option to change this within MSD itself. The AI offering is still at a very basic stage. In a session to discuss this, most of our questions were responded to by noting our question was "part of the AI roadmap" and so provides very limited value to us now. Only a small portion of the data points offered by Morningstar are supported by the AI solution.

### "Pros and cons on Morningstar Direct"

October 28, 2025

4.0

I use it, like I said on the pros section, to track the best funds for our clients. So what I use the most is the workspace tab and the lists to do screening. I use the portfolio analysis tab to monitor the performances (absolute and relative) of our custom models. Ultimately, I use the performance reporting tab to be warn by an email of the weekly performances of our investments.

Pros

Morningstar has a really wide database of funds (and ETF) that we use in our portfolios. Analysis on portfolio (such as portfolios attributions) are a great tool to monitor the relative performance of our investments.

Cons

The software interface is a bit old and not so attractive (even if it works). However it is too slow with many lags and bugs. Ultimately, the Excel add-in doesn't work very well. Sometimes, it blocks Excel to open (so you have to disable it). This point is the most annoying.

### "Feedback review"

February 12, 2026

5.0

My overall experience with Morningstar Direct has been very positive. The team is responsive and supportive, always willing to help create reports, find solutions and explore ways to make better use of the tool. It’s a strong platform for monitoring and analysing competitors’ behaviour, providing valuable insights that support our decision-making.

Pros

The tool is easy to use and straightforward to navigate. It’s clear and intuitive. The support team is quick and helpful whenever there’s an issue and I find the Mumbai office particularly responsive and reliable. Queries are dealt with promptly. I also value the regular training sessions. They’re practical and well organised.

Cons

One of the main drawbacks is the cost. This can be challenging from a budget perspective, particularly for smaller teams. It is also limiting that licences cannot be shared between team members. The requirement for individual licences reduces flexibility and makes it harder to manage access efficiently within the team.

### "Mixed Review Bag"

October 23, 2025

3.0

Overall, I think Morningstar Direct is a powerful tool with unmatched data access and strong capabilities for fund comparison and research, making it essential for my firm’s operations. However, its performance lags, especially during peak hours, and the clunky Presentation Studio can be a hassle. Slow support and underdeveloped features further frustrate me at times. While it’s a valuable resource, these issues hold it back from being as seamless and user-friendly as I’d like.

Pros

I find Morningstar Direct to be an incredibly data-rich platform, which is a huge advantage for my firm. Its extensive features allow me to produce high-quality client materials, research pieces, and detailed data comparisons with ease. It’s particularly valuable for comparing our funds, helping us analyze performance and make informed investment decisions efficiently.

Cons

However, I often find Morningstar Direct frustratingly slow, especially during North American stock trading hours, which disrupts my workflow. The Presentation Studio is a particular pain point—it’s sluggish and not intuitive, making it tough for me to create specific charts without a struggle. Morningstar’s support team can also be slow, sometimes taking days to respond and weeks to resolve my queries. Additionally, certain features, like trying to edit “My Sector” on our firm-level database, feel underdeveloped and restrictive, which limits my ability to customize data as needed.

### "Value for breadth and depth"

August 13, 2025

5.0

Overall, Morningstar is a quality product with breadth and depth of data. The various modules and tools make Morningstar Direct an integral part of our daily reporting process.

Pros

The interfaces are very intuitive and easy to use and there is continuity between the various modules with the UI.

Cons

Responses to stale data inquiries come too late. When we encounter missing data in Morningstar Direct, we report it to Morningstar immediately. And although a ticket is created right away, the resolution often either comes too late for us to use for any daily reporting OR the notification of resolution comes much later than when the data got fixed (requiring me to have to keep "refreshing" views to see if it has been fixed).

### "Chief Executive Officer"

October 23, 2025

4.0

Morningstar Direct has assisted us in running our Fiduciary Scoring process since 2016, before that it was all manual, plug and chug of data. The automation process has been a huge value to our Firm. Very thankful.

Pros

The best thing is the automation I use in EXCEL API data tools. The platform is stable, runs quickly on most days. The staff is very helpful in helping get things fixed, the software might have been down 2 or 3 days since 2016. That is a solid track record in my book. If you are an API excel user, this is the product for you.

Cons

The biggest issues I have are mainly to do with limitations of data. It seems over time the API data points have steadily declined, while the price has steadily increased. SBBI, benchmark, index, and category data have been but along with data pulls for balance sheet and income statement data we used for business valuation.

### "The Value of Having Morningstar Direct"

August 13, 2025

5.0

My overall experience with the platform has been great. I use direct everyday and find it easier to use each time. The customer support is the biggest postive I have as someone is always there to take my call or email and look into the case. For my data management needs, it fits perfectly and is a great value for what our firm pays

Pros

I like the ease of the platform and customer support when I need help. I have yet to encounter a problem that was not solved. The ability to scheule reports to run has been a huge time saver in my role.

Cons

I wouldn't call this a "con", but I frequently check and make portfolio manager updates along with some other data management updates. I think it would be valuable if I was able to self enter some data that was PM or person related.

### "Stable and strong "

October 22, 2025

4.0

It took a bit of time to understand the system. But after I got the hang of it, it is very good and stable system. 4-5 years ago we really struggled with Presentation studio, components will not calculate or holdings are not pulling through. But of late we have no issues. this has freed up a lot of time within the team. The overall stability of the system has improved substantially ver the last 5-years.

Pros

The ease and consistency of performance reporting. The auto generation of reports is very handy. The 'models' we can build in M\* is critical to our business. We had very little issues with model holdings and performance tracking.

Cons

In the performance reporting, there are no way to quickly change the reporting date. ie. I have a normal performance report which gives me returns for 1M, 3M, 6M 1Y. If i run this report today, I will get the latest numbers. But I cannot run the report to give me the numbers as on 31 Dec 2024. I would have to rebuild the report get those numbers.

### "No frills, does exactly what you need it to."

February 12, 2026

5.0

I use Morningstar daily and would find it difficult to do my job without it. You can trust the data and it has wide-ranging capabilities. Some of these capabilities I don't need, but many of them I do. Never had any major issues with the technical capability of Morningstar Direct. It's a no frills service which does what I need. Customer service is also very good.

Pros

Asset allocation (MVO) and portfolio management capabilities are particularly useful when dealing with fund-of-funds and MPS/model portfolios. Search Criteria and Performance Reporting are also very good for creating and regularly monitoring quant screens. The sheer breadth of data generally means everything you need is in one place, including ESG data through Sustainalytics.

Cons

Some of the functionality can be a little 'clunky' but this is preferable over the modernisation of software like this which, from experience, often overcomplicates things.

### "Everything you need for multi-managed PM"

October 27, 2025

Morningstar Direct is something that continues to surprise me with its capabilities and features. A power-user is truly able to achieve some remarkable things using only MS Direct.

Pros

Morningstar Direct has everything you need to run multi-managed portfolios. All the relevant technical tools that you need to build and manage models (and more) plus the ability to fully automate the upstream reporting stack are convenient put at your fingertips.

Cons

The archaic and often slow UI (that they are busy replacing with a sleek online experience) can be a source of frustration at times.

### "Morningstar Direct - Best in the business "

October 23, 2025

5.0

Very positive and I have used Morningstar Direct for 10 years. It is the best program in the market and has the most extensive data set. I love the peer group comparisons and ability to compare different styles against their most appropriate peer group.

Pros

The amount of data within Morningstar Direct is better than competitors. I use it extensively for portfolio aggregation, and performance and style analysis. I also upload our portfolios in Morningstar Direct to monitor as a shadow portfolio.

Cons

It can take a while to load and can be clunky at times. For first time or novice users it is also difficult to navigate. However, training support is very strong.

My overall experience with Morningstar has been a pleasant and enjoyable experience. Morningstar have given me training on a number of occasions and are always around to assist with any of my questions. the overall system is great and provides me with all the information i need to make investment decisions.

Pros

Morningstar has a large data set that covers all your investment research needs. I like that I can get individual stock data reports and mutual fund data reports. Morningstar covers all the assets classed and provides accurate information for my research and proposal needs.

Cons

Morningstar does require time and effort to learn the system and get comfortable to be able to get the correct data set that you are looking for in your reports.

### "Average and too expensive"

February 11, 2026

3.0

MS is far too broad. I cannot imagine users really work with the majority of the data points or the different sections. Some sections are very complicated to use, online help system is very low quality.

Pros

Fund and Market Research, Portfolio Aggregation Report, Presentation Studio, Direct Compass. I think Value for money is only for users who have a very broad and deep system knowlwdge

Cons

Far too many data points is overloading the system, instability of the system, instability of reports- missing data, slow reaction time to correct mistakes, very US centric on market reports.

### "A Performance Analyst’s Perspective on Morningstar Direct"

February 4, 2026

5.0

Overall, Morningstar Direct is a dependable and efficient tool that supports high-quality performance analysis in the South African investment environment.

Pros

As an investment performance analyst, what I value most about Morningstar Direct is the consistency and depth of its data across both local and global funds. It allows me to analyze performance, risk, and attribution using a single, reliable framework, which is critical when reporting on South African portfolios with offshore exposure.

Cons

What I like least about Morningstar Direct is the lack of flexibility when handling highly customized or non-standard portfolios. I often deal with bespoke mandates, composite structures, or client-specific benchmarks, and adapting the platform to reflect these accurately can be time-consuming.

### "Go to Source for Fund Data "

August 18, 2025

5.0

Overall pretty satisfied. I feel like Morningstar was actually ahead of its competition with presentation studio. Hoping they continue to innovate and keep adding functionalities.

Pros

Been using Morningstar for years now. This is my primary source for any fund related data. Here are the best parts: -Presentation Studio: generate reports on the go. -Performance Report: compare vs peers. Additionally, you get a lot of existing templates which are good to save time when running analysis.

Cons

Here is where there is room for improvement: -Stock level data or analysis: Morningstar been improving on this. But there is definitely more to add here. -Ease of extracting data: I feel that there is definitely a need for a module that helps with faster extraction of data. E.g., someone looking for daily returns. Right now there is a column limit it which is frustrating.
