For example, the top job titles include business owners, quality assurance managers, and manager of operations. Most roles who contact us for manufacturing software in the last year are business owners, with nearly half (48%) of the companies reporting $5 million or less in annual revenue and 65% have 50 or fewer employees.

## Recent trends in manufacturing software

**Artificial intelligence (AI) will drive innovation.** Gartner predicts that by 2027, “50% of manufacturers will use AI technologies to make their life cycle management applicable to more than just the product’s configuration, up from less than 5% in 2023.”\[[7](#sources)\] Meaning, AI will begin to provide data insights and automation of tasks to product design but also to the end-to-end product lifecycle. Traditional configuration life cycle management (CLM) approaches require a considerable amount of manual work, coordination, data management and alignment across sales, engineering, manufacturing and customer service. AI functionality will increase CLM’s scalability and shorten the amount of time needed from order to delivery.

**The rise of the machine customer.** Gartner also predicts that by 2028, “industrial manufacturers that adopt machine customers will utilize these capabilities for 30% of their maintenance and part procurement activities, up from less than 1% in 2023.” A machine customer is an Internet of Things (IoT) enabled software program that can autonomously interact with internal resources or external third parties for tasks such as placing orders for materials, submitting repair requests, and even negotiating rates and terms.
