## Features comparison

When comparing Google Forms and SurveyMonkey in order to determine which you should use, the first step is looking at the features both systems offer to figure out which one has what you need. We’ve analyzed data from our reviewers to compare the following top features between these two popular products.[\[1\]](#footnotes)

Key features rated by users

Features selected based on 8,904 reviews from survey software users.
about the Fit Score methodology.

Fit Score methodology

To calculate the Fit Score, our proprietary methodology factors in the following:

- The importance level for each feature. By default, this is determined by user reviews. They can rate a feature Critical, High, Low, or Not Used.
- Feedback from real users on how the product performs for each key feature, derived from verified user reviews and ratings.

Please note:

- To calculate the Fit Score, the number of reviews for those features and the actual rating carry the same weight. You might see that, in some cases, even though the ratings are the same, we still determine a winner because it had more reviews.
- If the Fit Score is not shown for a specific product, that only means there are currently not enough relevant data points to develop a meaningful score. It does not indicate that the product should be excluded from further evaluation.

The customizable questions feature within Google Forms allows users to select the type of question they want to create, such as fill-in-the-blank or multiple-choice, and then edit the question and response options according to their preferences. In addition to changing the copy of the question and response options, users can also add things like images or videos as well as group questions and determine if questions should be mandatory or optional.

SurveyMonkey’s customizable questions feature is very similar to Google Forms in that it allows users to fully edit the types of survey questions they use, as well as the question text and response options. SurveyMonkey has the added option of creating a shared question bank to team accounts from which users can select questions that have been previously created and edited.

Survey Builder

4.6 (914)

Both Google Forms and SurveyMonkey are essentially survey-building tools so, naturally, they both include features to build surveys.

Google Forms allows users to create custom surveys from scratch, starting with the question types and text. Users can manage how questions are grouped within the survey as well as form logic that determines which respondents see which questions. Because Google Forms is a part of Google Workspace, this tool integrates seamlessly with other Google platforms, such as Google Sheets, to capture and analyze data.

SurveyMonkey’s survey builder includes all of the same functionality as Google Forms. Additionally, users have the ability to customize the visual elements of their surveys in order to match company branding. Both Google Forms and SurveyMonkey also use AI to help users write good survey questions that will capture valuable data.

Within the Google Forms “Responses” tab, users can access all of the data from survey respondents either collectively or broken out individually. Users have access to automatically generated data visualizations, like bar graphs and pie charts, that make the information clear and easier to understand. They can view questions individually for drill-down analysis, and the simple integration with Google Sheets makes exporting data incredibly easy.

SurveyMonkey’s survey analysis feature includes all of the same features as well as filter options for advanced search and crosstabs comparisons. SurveyMonkey also has the ability to create word clouds and conduct sentiment analysis to better understand open-ended responses.

Data Import/Export

4.5 (1,263)

4.3 (725)

Google Forms allows users to easily export data to Google Sheets, but results can also be exported in an Excel spreadsheet.

Similarly, SurveyMonkey integrates with Google to allow users to export into Google Sheets, as well as a CSV or Excel file.

Here’s a detailed comparison between the pricing plans of the two solutions.

### Google Forms pricing

Google Forms is available as part of the Google Workspace suite of apps, so users can’t access this tool completely for free. However, an individual can purchase Google Workspace for $9.99 per month or $99.99 per year if they prefer to be billed annually. Also, there is a 14-day free trial available for individuals before they will be charged to use these apps.

If you are considering Google Forms for a team or business organization, they have broken their pricing out into four plans:

- The most basic is called Business Starter, it costs $7 per user per month and includes 30 GB of pooled storage.

- The next step up is Business Plus, which starts at $22 per user per month and comes with 5TB of pooled storage.

All three of these plans require a one-year commitment at sign-up. The fourth plan is their Enterprise tier, and pricing is only available upon request for this one.

### SurveyMonkey pricing

SurveyMonkey also has pricing plans broken out for individuals and business organizations. For individuals who aren’t sure they want to commit to paying beyond a month, the software is available for $99 per month and can be canceled at any time. For those who are certain they’ll use the software for at least a year, they can subscribe to the Advantage Annual plan, which bills $468 once a year. Three team plans are also available. The lowest-priced plan is the Team Advantage, which costs $30 per user per month. The Team Premier plan includes more features and costs $92 per user per month. ### User interface

When comparing the user interfaces of Google Forms and SurveyMonkey, both platforms receive high marks from reviewers for their simplicity and ease of use, though each has its unique strengths and weaknesses. According to users, SurveyMonkey has a slight edge in this category, with 85% of users rating the user interface for SurveyMonkey positively against 82% for Google Forms.

Users often comment on the user-friendly and intuitive design of Google Forms, which makes it accessible even to those with minimal technical skills. The drag-and-drop functionality and seamless integration with other Google products, such as Google Sheets, are highlighted as key advantages, enabling efficient data collection and analysis. However, some users criticize Google Forms for its limited customization options and somewhat basic, outdated aesthetic. Users seeking more visually engaging and sophisticated forms often find Google Forms lacking, particularly when dealing with complex surveys that require conditional logic.

SurveyMonkey is also recognized for its intuitive and straightforward interface, with users appreciating the drag-and-drop features and the variety of templates and question types available. The platform's interface is generally seen as clean and visually appealing, enhancing the overall user experience. However, some users find SurveyMonkey's interface to be over-complicated, which can hinder navigation and efficiency. Customization limitations and the interface's occasional slowness and lack of mobile-friendliness are noted as drawbacks. Additionally, frequent changes to the UI can be frustrating for users who prefer a consistent experience. Despite these issues, SurveyMonkey's robust data analysis features and integration capabilities are considered significant advantages, making it a strong contender in the survey tool market.

### Learning curve for new users

When comparing the learning curves of Google Forms and SurveyMonkey for new users, both platforms are recognized for their accessibility and ease of use, though 93% of users rate this aspect of Google Forms positively against 89% of SurveyMonkey reviewers.

Google Forms is often highlighted for its user-friendly and intuitive interface, allowing beginners and non-technical users to quickly create and share forms, surveys, and quizzes with minimal training. The integration with Google services like Google Sheets further simplifies data management and analysis. However, users note a slight learning curve when attempting to utilize more advanced features such as conditional logic and question branching, compounded by the lack of built-in tutorials and comprehensive guides.

Similarly, reviewers often note SurveyMonkey’s user-friendly design, which facilitates quick survey creation and distribution, especially for beginners. The platform's intuitive interface, along with pre-defined templates and a step-based format, helps new users navigate the survey creation process. SurveyMonkey offers various tutorials and guides, which help users acclimate to the tool. Nonetheless, mastering advanced features and customizing surveys to specific needs can introduce a learning curve, with some users finding the platform initially overwhelming. Although SurveyMonkey provides some tutorials, the perceived lack of detailed, hands-on support may necessitate seeking additional resources or investing more time to fully leverage the platform's capabilities.

Overall, both platforms are accessible for beginners, but they require additional effort to master advanced functionalities.

### Customer service and support

Both Google Forms and SurveyMonkey receive mixed reviews regarding customer service and support. Only 62% of users rate Google Forms positively for its support options and 53% rate SurveyMonkey positively in this area.

Some users find Google Forms to have a helpful and professional customer support team, which can efficiently resolve issues through direct contact or the help desk. The integration with other Google services, like Google Sheets, is also seen as beneficial for managing data and support requests. However, many users express frustration with the lack of accessible and immediate support, particularly for those using the free version. Difficulties in reaching customer support, delays in response times, and reliance on help pages and public forums are common complaints. The absence of a virtual chat option further limits the support experience, leaving some users feeling underserved.

Similarly, SurveyMonkey's users’ opinions on its customer support are mixed. Many praise the responsiveness and helpfulness of the support team, available 24/7 and in multiple languages. Users who pay for higher-tiered plans also have access to live tech support and the option to contact support via phone or email, which they find valuable. They find the support team knowledgeable and capable, especially during initial setup and complex survey configurations. Despite these positives, some users report slow response times, particularly on lower-tier plans that rely solely on email communication. Criticisms also include the perceived unhelpfulness and rigidity of the support team, especially concerning billing issues and refund requests. The lack of live chat options and limited support access for lower-tier plans contribute to user dissatisfaction.

Overall, while both platforms have their strengths in customer support, they also face significant challenges in providing consistent, accessible, and timely assistance.

### Security and reliability

When comparing the security and reliability of Google Forms and SurveyMonkey, both platforms offer valuable features but also face criticisms regarding data protection and privacy. Among Google Forms reviewers, 61% rate this aspect of the platform positively, compared to 67% of SurveyMonkey users.

Google Forms is generally appreciated for its secure data storage through Google Drive, which includes features like password protection, access control, and real-time response tracking. These elements contribute to a secure and reliable experience, particularly for businesses and educational institutions. The seamless integration with other Google services, automatic cloud backup, and data analysis capabilities via Google Sheets further enhance its reliability. However, concerns are raised about the platform's limited advanced security options, such as encrypted data storage, making it less suitable for highly sensitive information. Additionally, issues with internet dependency, potential online vulnerabilities, and data privacy due to Google's ownership are highlighted by some users.

SurveyMonkey, on the other hand, is praised for its security measures, including anonymous surveys, encryption, and compliance with regulations like HIPAA, which are essential for handling sensitive data. These features help maintain data confidentiality and user privacy, encouraging higher participation rates. The platform's cloud-based nature ensures secure and accessible data storage and its intuitive interface adds to its reliability. Despite these strengths, some users express concerns about data encryption and compliance with privacy laws like CCPA and GDPR, which can limit its use in certain settings. Security vulnerabilities, firewall restrictions, and occasional downtime also raise questions about its reliability. While many users trust SurveyMonkey for secure data collection, these concerns indicate areas where the platform could improve its security features.
